Salahuddin Bakery in Johor Bahru Old Town - Heritage Trail Edition

Take a trip back in time with a visit to Salahuddin Bakery today.

Jalan Dhoby in downtown Johore Bahru

Johor Bahru, 24 Jan 1966.  Today after dropping of my laundry at Jalan Dhoby, I suddenly felt a craving for Bengali curry puffs.

Well, where else would I go to for my favourite Bengali curry puffs other than Salahuddin Bakery along Jalan Dhoby?

Golden brown Bengali curry puffs at 10 sens each
Salahuddin's curry puffs are crispy and flaky on the outside. Inside the bulbous puff, it is filled with either curried potatoes, or mixed with chicken or lamb. My favourite is the lamb. I like that unique aroma of lamb trapped inside the crust - when I bite into the curry puff, the aroma escapes in a puff of fragrance that rushes up my nose.

The thing about Salahuddin's is that their breads and puffs are freshly baked everyday and I can always get my curry puffs straight out of this old charcoal and wood fired oven in the wall.

While waiting and smelling the delightful whiffs of aroma from the freshly baked pastries, I also love chatting and catching up with enchè Salahuddin who is a very warm and friendly gentleman.

Every trip to Salahuddin's makes me and my family very happy as I always bring home freshly baked delicious goodies.

After note: Salahuddin Bakery is still the same after all these years. Only change is the price of its confectioneries. The Bengali curry puff now sells for RM1.70 each.

  1. Dear Writer

Thank you for posting these pictures. Do you have any more pictures of Jalan Dhoby? I was born in 15 Jalan Dhoby, diagonally opposite the bakery, in a shophouse with a balcony. I am willing to pay for old pictures of late thirties to sixties.

    thanks

  2. Dear Prasanna, I do not have other pictures of Jalan Dhoby at the moment. I got some photos from visiting the Tourism Malaysia - Johor office in JOTIC. I am now undertaking a personal project to preserve the heritage photos of old Johor eateries and hawkers. If you are able to give me your email, I will contact you when I do come across more heritage photos of Jalan Dhoby. Thank you very much for visiting my site.
