世纪好味 Pork Organ (Offal) Soup 猪杂汤 @ Kim Ling 金岭 Coffee Shop in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru

I was at Kim Ling 金岭 coffee shop this morning because a friend who lives in Taman Perling and who knows his food, strongly recommended the popular hawker stalls there.

Indeed, Kim Ling is a bustling breakfast hub in the morning. There are many stalls here serving a wide variety of hawker fare including pork organ soup, kway tiao kia (kway chap), yong tau foo, vegetarian food 素食, Penang fried kway teow, Penang prawn noodles, you char kway, chicken rice, chee cheong fun, mixed vegetable rice 经济饭菜, and more. Really.

I used to enjoy the old Margaret Drive food centre pork organ soup in 1980s Singapore with office colleagues but have not eaten pork organ soup for a very long time.

When I saw the enthusiasm of the pork organ soup 猪杂汤 stall owner at Kim Ling and the brisk business at his stall, I suddenly craved for this soup again.

MR Ang is the second generation owner of the stall that began business in Taman Century 40 years ago, before moving to Taman Perling 20 years later. Despite the years, the pork organ soup here is still prepared in the old, traditional 古早 Teochew way.

The soup which is boiled with bone stock is sweet, with hints of tangy sourness from the kiam chye (preserved cabbage), and not too salty. The slightly cloudy broth has good body and is not too oily. There were a couple of lard crackles floating in the soup and they were crunchy, nutty and nice. Hmm.. next time, I shall ask the boss for more of these.

The bowl of soup was choked full of slices of pork organs and meat.

Pig tongue

The boss cooked everything just right, retaining a nice chewy, tender texture and sweet taste.

Other people's soup. The beautiful kidneys were sold out before my turn L

世纪好味 pork organ (offal) soup was well worth exceeding my cholesterol and calorie limits J

世纪好味 pork organ soup stall also serves bitter gourd soup and braised pork trotters, both of which I intend to come back for.

Kim Ling 金岭 is a good coffee shop for people travelling in groups as there is something for everyone. The hawker stalls at Kim Ling open from 7:00am to about 2:00pm. In the evening, a zhi char stall takes over.

I firmly believe that taste is subjective and so, warmly welcome differing viewpoints :-D But, I disapprove negative comments that are anonymous or hide behind fake identities. I feel that that is the same as speaking ill of others behind their backs. I look forward to all your comments :-D Thank you. (Date: 18 Dec 2015)
