Breakfast at Roti Canai (Prata) Bukit Chagar • Gerai MFR in Johor Bahru ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Roti Canai (Prata) Bukit Chagar. Gerai MFR in Johor Bahru

✍ 4 Dec 2022.
You know... one of my favourite places to hangout while waiting to pick up my buddies at the JB CIQ is the roti canai (prata) stall at Bukit Chagar. Standing by here with my roti canai and teh tarik, it takes me just 3 minutes to reach them once they messaged me that they have cleared JB immigration. The wait is very agreeable as Bukit Chagar's roti canai is so delicious (one of Johor Bahru's best).

Stall name: Bukit Chagar Roti Canai

Address: 394, Jalan Tengku Azizah, Bukit Chagar, 80300 Johor Bahru

Hours: 7:00am - 11:00am

For years, everybody calls this no signboard stall Roti Canai Bukit Chagar because it is located at the intersection of Jalan Bukit Chagar and Jalan Tengku Azizah on Bukit Chagar. This time, I saw a large yellow signboard proclaiming this Gerai MFR (so, henceforth I shall refer to this as Gerai MFR).

The stall was as busy as ever with many office workers having their breakfast here. I saw some old and some new faces working at the stall.

Gerai MFR knead their own dough (this is the norm in JB). The dough are flipped and stretched, and fried on a flat iron griddle with sizzling oil till golden brown outside.

The roti which costs RM1 each is eaten with a small dish of mild watery sweet savoury curry. Customers add one or two dollops of sambal chili to give the mild curry a spicy hot boost to taste.

The roti was well browned and slightly crispy outside. The inside had a gently chewy bite. It was not greasy and tasted a bit like a wheat biscuit inside, when eaten neat.

When we dunked the roti in the curry and sambal chili, it sponged up the sweet savoury spicy flavours. The wet bread was loaded with flavours and had an interesting texture of gentle chewiness with some residual crispness.

👍 It's a very nice and pleasant breakfast that I can have every time I am in the area. One of the simple everyday blessings that makes me feel very contented with life.

Please recommend me other excellent roti canai  places in JB 😋

Roti Canai (Prata) Bukit Chagar. Gerai MFR in Johor Bahru

✍ 4 Sep 2012. Several of my friends are life long, firm supporters of Bukit Chagar roti canai (prata) which had been in business for over twenty four years.

Once you tried Bukit Chagar roti canai, it is easy to understand why it is so popular all these long years.

Bukit Chagar roti canai is thick, crispy outside, softer inside, and not-too-oily.

Bukit Chagar roti canai goes very well with their dhal which is mild and not too spicy. For those who like it hot, you can add a dab of sambal chili for that extra oomph... which is the way I like it.

Making roti canai is a common sight in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been watching roti canai men at work since my childhood, yet I am still fascinated by the twirling and flipping.

Let's see what makes Bukit Chagar roti canai so special.

To start with, the dough is individually handmade right there at the stall, not mass produced in a central kitchen somewhere else.

The dough is flipped and stretched to a thin film, one by one.

Flipping and twirling the dough traps air and they look like those cute balloon sculptures at children's parties or like large blown up bubble gum.

The fancy "balloons" are left to sit for a few minutes on the slab.

After a few minutes, the air leaks out of the "balloons". The deflated "balloons" are then flattened again and laid on the sizzling hot plate to fry until crisp and golden brown outside.

When done, the chef crush the stack of roti canai with a couple of sharp claps of the hot bread between his hands.

👍 Bukit Chagar Gerai MFR roti prata - local, humble, cosy, relaxed, convivial, unpretentious, inexpensive, delicious - so many reasons that make breakfast at Bukit Chagar roti canai very, very hard to beat.

  5. Yes, the roti is crispy but at the same time, it is much too oily.
Also, u cannot have good prata without good curry and theirs leaves much to be desired. It is just too bland and watery.
