My friend Chef Gary, his brother and I went on an asam pedas hunt recently.

We tried two asam pedas shops. The first shop we tried wasn't blog worthy.

The asam pedas at the second shop, Restoran Anisofea was so good, I went back for a second time within two weeks (even though I got a packed schedule of restaurants to visit :P ).

Restoran Anisofea is in a simple shop lot just across the road from Sultan Ismail Hospital.

Inside Restoran Anisofea, the tables and chairs are neatly arranged, quite close together, simple, clean and tidy. Decor is basic and minimal.

Restoran Anisofea is quite busy, especially during lunch.

The asam pedas recipe at the 5 year old Restoran Anisofea is the family heirloom of the owner, Datin Hajah Salbiah bt Hj Harun.

Datin Hajah Salbiah hails from Kluang.

"You can call this Asam Pedas Kluang" Datin Hajah Salbiah said in reply to my question on what style of asam pedas does her restaurant serve.

Datin Salbiah said Anisofea's gravy is made from scratch using ingredients like chili, ginger, garlic, onions, spices and herbs, all blended together by her personally.

We visited Restoran Anisofea twice and these were the food we had during our two visits.

We had Anisofea's signature asam pedas, of course.

I always order fish head because the head and the meat around the belly and pectoral fin are my favourite parts of a fish.

The fish at Restoran Anisofea was very fresh thanks to a reliable fish supplier.

The soupy asam pedas gravy was a mild blend of tangy, sweet, spicy and salty flavours. We could taste the freshness of the many ingredients that went into making the gravy.

It was delicious, and I found myself drinking spoonful after spoonful of the gravy.

Besides their signature asam pedas, Restoran Anisofea also serves other interesting traditional Malay dishes.

Signature Tempe Goreng Berempah which is fried fermented soy bean cake marinated in herbs and spices. Savoury, dry with a nutty crunch.

I always order sambal petai (stinky beans) whenever it is available. Nicely executed, the crunchy beans, onions and tomato were smothered in a mildly salty, sweet and spicy sambal. It would be perfect for me, if this was a tad less oily.

Popular Ayam Kampung Goreng Berempah. The meat was bland and slightly dry but delicious when eaten with the accompanying spicy savoury kicap pedas dip (spicy soy sauce).

Ikan Goreng Ekor or fried fish tail. Nicely fried thick fish tail.

The popular vegetable omelette.

Simple white rice, simply perfect with asam pedas gravy.

Caught a picture of this piping hot asam pedas fish tail before it was delivered to another waiting customer.

Restoran Anisofe is one of the best places for asam pedas in Johor Bahru.

  1. I must say i was very dissapointed with this eatery for a number of reasons.

    1. It was price over quality. A pot of asam pedas with 2 small pieces of fish set us back rm 40.
    2. the fried tempe was overcooked and tasted like burnt paper.
    3. Barli was artificial and unjustified at rm 3per cup.

Of the things that we enjoyed were their crisp and aromatic taugeh in ikan masin and also their omelette. their asam pedas gravy was also not that oily.

I dont mind paying for good food, but I reckon we will give this place a skip next time for other alternatives such as Kedai Botak JB and etc for a far better and reasonably priced asam pedas.

  3. Perfect taste of asam pedas. I tried Sg Melayu Asam Pedas but still Anisofea over the latter. My choice of asam pedas whenever in JB
