While exploring Kuala Lumpur's Brickfields (KL's Little India) district, I stumbled upon this 30 year old Brickfields Pisang Goreng stall. The fried banana fritter from this humble road side stall was simply marvellous.

When I see a queue like this at 3:00pm, it's a sure sign to stop and taste the good food.

Seeing the busy hawker boss hard at work further confirms that this is a hot stall - must try. Mr. Chiam, the boss told me that he has been running this stall in Brickfields for over 30 years.

The younger Mr. Chiam is also busy at the stall working hand in hand with his dad.

Fresh and fully ripe Pisang Raja which is much sought after by discerning pisang goreng fans.

The fresh bananas are peeled, battered and fried right here at the road side stall.

Mr. Chiam fries the banana, Chinese New Year cakes (with yam and sweet potato slices), and sesame balls with red bean or crushed peanut fillings in a large, deep enamel pan of oil. All the fried fritters are sold to waiting customers as soon as they are ready - so everything is fresh and piping hot.

I was curious when noticed Mr. Chiam speaking into a box while frying. I soon realised that Mr. Chiam was speaking into an "ancient" intercom system. When I asked him about it, Mr. Chiam explained that several of his regular customers in the area are hooked up with him via this intercom. They make their orders via this intercom system :-D

hahaha I have never seen anything like this before.

The fried fritters are stood for a short while to let the oil drip off before being bagged for waiting customers.

I just bought this three pieces (pisang goreng, kuih bakul, sesame ball with red bean filling) to try as I was alone. There were also curry puffs which I have to come back for next time.

Everything was great but this pisang goreng was particularly outstanding. A whole banana was wrapped in a batter that was not too thick and it had just the right amount of light crispiness. The banana flesh had melted under the boiling oil into a pasty, very sweet gooey creamy "cheese".

Love it.

Brickfields Pisang Goreng is just outside Restoran One Sentral. If you are at KL Sentral, pop by this pisang goreng stall - chances are you'll agree with their legion of fans that this is the best banana fritter in KL.

  3. you got lied to. the intercom is to the upper floor of the building where they will lower down baskets of peeled banana and "raw" curry puff when he needs to fry them. Used to be 1 buck per banana (pisang raja) but now price went up. their currypuffs are similar to Old Chang Kee currypuffs. To the right of the queue there usually is this old man selling freshly made soy milk. so nice to have a ice cold soy milk while waiting to collect your currypuffs :P
