Ampang Yoong Tau Foo in Johor Bahru JK1217

Nelson from Ampang (KL) moved to Johor Bahru in the 1990s and missed his hometown yong tau foo. A man of action, Nelson and wife Fancy took matters into their own hands. Nelson and Fancy teamed up with Homeland Yong Tau Foo of Ampang to set their own YTF restaurant right here in JB.

There are three famous yong tau foo restaurants in Ampang Kuala Lumpur. They are Homeland, Orchard View and Foong Foong. I was a regular at Foong Foong when I was living in KL and still drop by whenever I have the chance ever since.

What sets Homeland apart from other YTF stalls is they do not use pork in their food. So, Ampang Yoong Tau Foo in JB is pork free too.

Let's makan! (Let's eat!)

Assorted yong tau foo stuffed with fish paste.

Here all the yong tau foo pieces are filled only with Ikan Tenggiri or Mackerel paste (plus some starch). No pork, salted fish or MSG is added, so the taste is less layered and less savoury. All we get is a slight taste of fish and the flavours of fresh vegetables and tofu.

It's ideal for the more health conscious and people who do not take pork.

Fried tofu crisps with fish fillings. Best eaten when freshly fried, at it's crispiest.

Crispy fried wanton with fish, carrot and "wood ear" fungus fillings.

Fish ball soup.

The soup is made with soy beans, fish and turnips, so it is gently savoury and naturally sweet. I love the clean tasting soup.

The simple menu - everything on just one sheet. As you can see, the prices are reasonable.

Ampang Yoong Tau Foo is a nice comfortable pit stop if you want simple comfort dishes which are healthful and reasonably priced.

It's a convenient stopover if you are on the way up north from JB. Get some clean carbs, fibre and kopi before getting back on the North South Expressway.

Disclosure: Please note that this is an invited tasting.

  7. Only one concern is value for money. At RM1.20 per pc versus Foong Foong standard RM1.10 per pc..... They consider expensive and each piece also smaller in size. So overall consider expensive.
