When in Johor Bahru, one of my favourite experiences is street side al fresco dining.

Kokki 郭记凤爪面 along Jalan Teju in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah is very popular among locals. Kokki serves noodles with chicken claws and yong tau foo with curry.

Mr Kok founded Kokki 33 years ago. Looking back, Mr Kok shared that it was hard in the beginning. He couldn't even sell RM20 worth of noodles a day during the early days. He had no choice but kept on trying and improving until today's thriving business.

In the beginning, Mr Kok's stall served only chicken claw noodles, hence the name 郭记凤爪面 (Kokki chicken claw noodles). Over time, the curry yong tau foo became very popular too.

Kokki still serves this classic chicken claw noodles.

The large chicken claws are deep fried, then braised together with mushrooms in soy sauce till every part including the bones are mushy soft.

It is served with generic egg noodles which are doused with the savoury braising sauce. The generic noodles were limp and the braising sauce was watery and salty.

As we love braised chicken claws, we ordered more claws in braising sauce.

The chunky yong tau foo - fresh vegetables stuffed with a mixed pork and fish filling at RM1 per piece. We love it - this is a healthy kind of addiction.

The clear soup was very mildly savoury and nicely naturally sweet.

We next indulged ourselves on another round of yong tau foo, this time in curry broth - this is Kokki's best selling item at the moment.

The same big deliciously loaded yong tau foo pieces dunked in a savoury sweet mildly spicy curry broth. The curry broth has a rich coconut milk base and leaning on the salty side.

The popular curry is made in this large pot.

A peek into the large pot of curry - lots of tau pok inside.

If you are in the Skudai area in the evening and want to go local, drop by Kokki. I would be eating lots of their yong tau foo, especially those made with fresh vegetables. The food is nice, and the experience is priceless - it's street food in the most literal sense.

  1. It is a very busy place even at 9pm. The chicken feet and noodles (more towards crunchy than limp)are not too bad. The satay stall just outside serves tasty satay with a robust gravy. A good filler while waiting patiently for your noodles :-)
