Shi Wah Bak Kut Teh in Johor Bahru, Permas Jaya 古来世华肉骨茶

Kulai's famous brand of Sze Hwa bak kut teh has a few shops with the same name around Johor Bahru. The Shi Wah bak kut teh in Permas Jaya is probably the most popular (outside of Kulai).

Shi Wah (Permas) occupies a large corner unit near to the Jusco Mall in Permas Jaya. The shop is always crowded but there are ample seats.

At Shi Wah (Permas), staff will pick out your order of ribs, tail, innards or bones from that signature large blue enamel pot just like the way they do in Kulai Sze Hwa.

Nowadays, I always start with pig tail because I like the combination of bone, meat, fat and skin which only tails have :-D

The Chinese tea coloured broth was savoury, herbal and sweet, leaning more on the savoury side. It's a well liked broth judging by Shi Wah's popularity though my own taste buds are for a broth one notch sweeter and more herbal.

Bone, tender meat, thick layer of fat that is like a warm sweet juicy pear and capped with a layer of soft chewy skin. Pig tail always works for me.

Self indulgence (of pig tail) done, we had a obligatory bowl of bak kut teh with ribs.

Nice firm yet tender bite - a texture locals prefer. The meat fall off the bone easily with gentle bites.

Vinegar pork knuckles 豬腳醋.

Mainly sourish with gentle ginger taste and slight sweetness. The pork knuckle was braised till tender.

The preserved vegetables had a nice sourish sweet flavour and refreshing crunch.

I like eating my you char kueh dunked in bak kut teh broth.

Our bill - Shi Wah (Permas) is competitive in pricing among JB bak kut teh shops.

->> A Kulai Sze Hwa style bak kut teh shop popular with JB folk. The broth leans on savoury (salty) with subtle herbal notes. The fresh tender meat is slightly firm.

  1. Thanks for the article as M'sian style BKT is one of my favorites. Since you like the soup to be more herbal, you should do a Klang BKT food trip one of these days.

    I ever tried the Teluk Pulai Pottery one and loved it, especially the dry version. There're at least 4 famous BKT shops worth checking out. But forewarned though that the traffic there is horrendous and you may find your car blocked by double (or even triple parking) and unable to get out :-)
