Sometimes More often than not, the food that we keep coming back to is not necessarily the most delicious nor the most glamorous (or "Instagrammable" in "Millennial Gen" speak). It is food that has the most meaning to us, personally. Often, it is part of our rite of passage. A marker of who we are and where we come from.

This morning, our friend John who is an established entrepreneur in Johor brought us to his favourite breakfast place.

It's just the humble fried yellow noodles and bee hoon (rice vermicelli) at Sheng Fuat coffee shop in Taman Gaya.

You see, when John was a teen in the 1980s, he came down south from a small town in Perak to Johor Bahru to seek his fortune with nothing to his name except youthful aspirations and the willingness to work hard for it.

The mantra then was "Go south, young man". I think the South still have that kind of magnetism today, if not more.

A few hometown buddies shared a room in Taman Century and Sheng Fuat's affordable fried noodles was what energised the young men's bodies and sustained their aspirations.

Sheng Fuat's boss, Mr Lee started the fried noodles stall in the 1970s in Taman Century. He later moved into the present premise in Taman Gaya in 2007. The shop serves simple fried noodles with various sides like fish cake, fried tofu, luncheon meat, fried egg, fried "fish cutlet", spring rolls, hash browns, wieners and so on.

The furnishing is basic and decor is bare bones inside Sheng Fuat, but it is comfortable and clean enough.

The food is displayed in a steel and glass show cabinet.

Tell the friendly boss what you want and s/he will pick out the food for you.

The boss told me that when they first started they only had fried noodle, fried luncheon meat, fish cake, egg and "fish cutlet". So, I went for the original classic version.

The generic yellow noodles were fried till tender and completely enveloped in a well balanced, mildly savoury sweet sauce.

The mass produced sides were nicely fried and not overly greasy.

Overall, a very palatable, affordable staple to fuel the body for the morning.

Sheng Fuat's sambal chili is a big winner for me. It tastes mildly savoury sweet spicy with a slight tang like asam pedas.

->> If you are heading north from JB along the Tebrau Highway, a breakfast at Sheng Fuat should power you all the way to Kota Tinggi, Mersing or Desaru.
