Bumped into my foodie buddy Ong who is from Pontian town and he reminded me that Sin Kee Pontian wanton mee has moved to it's own shop at Jalan Bakek Jaya Utama. Ong said I should visit Sin Kee again soon if I had not been to their new shop.

So, here we are at Sin Kee's spacious shop at Jalan Bakek Jaya Utama in Pontian (my last visit to Sin Kee was four years ago when it was a stall at 8383 coffee shop). Pontian, the rustic little seaside town is about one hour and a half leisurely drive from JB.

The lady boss is at the front today. It's a busy Tuesday afternoon :-D

Sin Kee serves it's popular egg noodles with various types of sauces. For our first plate today, we opted for the signature Pontian style sauce (of course).

The reddish blend of tomato ketchup and chili sauce is a mildly savoury, tangy, and spicy blend. It's either you love it or you don't. Personally, I am ok with this ketchup-chili sauce but will opt instead for any sauce that come with lots of lard (when it is available).

The egg noodles were... wow!

The round strands were of thicker gauge. They were heavy and dense. They have a tender outer layer and a stiffer core inside. So, when we bite into it, we felt tenderness at first and then we needed to gently exert a little to cut all the way through, separating the strands. This happens in less than half a second, so what we felt is a bouncy bite. Brilliant egg noodles, one of the best I've tasted.

However, we could not taste the egginess as it was masked by the strong flavours of the tomato-chili sauce.

Next, we tried the black sauce, the kind commonly found in small town Johor (other than Pontian). Sin Kee's version is savoury sweet with very subtle hardly perceivable lard flavour.

Same brilliant egg noodles, though the egginess was lost in the smothering savoury sweet sauce.

Lastly, we tried the "black pepper sauce" at the lady boss' suggestion.

Savoury sweet sauce with a slight peppery taste. Personally, I prefer any peppery sauce to be more assertive :-D

But, Sin Kee's marvellous noodles won my heart again :-D

The char siew is mostly lean. I like it that they are sliced in larger pieces so that we can taste it's mildly sweet flavours.

I liked Sin Kee's wanton broth. It's just the classic pork bone, anchovy and soy bean broth - simple is always best :-D

The wantons were tasty with sweetness of fresh pork but they were loosely packed, breaking up quickly. The couple of fish balls were generic.

Pontian wanton mee is usually often eaten with otak otak. The mildly spicy otak otak is nice though not exceptionally meaty.

->> Sin Kee is one of the flag bearers of the Pontian style of wanton mee. Whether you like the ketchup-chili sauce or not, I think you will be impressed with Sin Kee's signature springy egg noodles. If you are coming to Pontian for a food trail, you need to include Sin Kee in your itinerary.

  1. Don't think it's accurate to say black sauce wanton noodles is not common in Pontian. All Pontian stalls sell the four basic types: Black, spicy, tomato, and soup, whereas a few will also make oyster and white sauces noodles. Black pepper is something I've only learnt today.
The practice of eating with otak-otak only started in the 90s with the popularisation of electric grills, and it is only sold at the few main shops. No one in my circle with eats the noodles with otak-otak.
