Finally had a chance to taste 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles at Tekka Market today right after my medical appointment. So happy to manage to catch the last few bowls before the stall closes at 2:00pm 😃

545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles is located at Tekka Centre in Little India - one of my favourite places in Singapore.

Tekka is one of my favourite hawker centres in Singapore as it is centrally located, next to Little India MRT station (exit C) and there are lots of varieties of traditional Malay, Indian and Chinese street food stalls here.

I opted for the larger SGD4 serving to get more food for thought  The large bowl of "dry" noodles came with a small bowl of soup. (There is also a "soup" version.)

The warm light brown, tea coloured watery broth has a nice crustacean umami-savouriness. The taste of prawn shells was pronounced and was balanced with sweetness. The first spoonful gave me a little kick, and I am in love already.

I like 545 Whampoa's soup as it reminded me of the prawn noodle broth I had in 1960s Singapore (though that was more savoury, less sweet) - it is rarely found nowadays.

🙏 Please let me know where else in Singapore, I can find old style prawn mee soup like this. Thank you in advance

The dark maroon coloured sambal chili sauce was robust with strong flavours which is the way I like it, when eating generic factory made noodles.

The heavy sauce laced with lard was a well balanced savoury spicy paste with hints of porcine flavour and sweetness. It was not too spicy though there were bits of chili flakes. It was also not overly salty. The tasty sauce made it easy to finish up all the yellow noodles.

545 Whampoa's aromatic fried shallots were crispy and tasty (unlike the mass produced ones which are tasteless like wood chips, except for the rancid taste of overused oil). There was also sprinkling of aromatic lard cracklings.

The good sized prawns were shelled. They were fresh, done just right so we can taste the prawn's natural flavours. Though the sambal chili sauce was robust, I was still able to taste the fresh prawns. There were 4 or 5 prawns in the bowl.

The thin long pork slices were fresh and nicely done too.

👍 This is a rare old school style prawn mee in Singapore - I don't know where else to find this type of prawn mee in Singapore.

    this type of prawn mee can be found in office buildings or in canteen of " hub" .
    I also found one at cuppage plaza, isle cafe , available on saturdays breakfast and lunch.
    Not so umph.

    This one at Tekka market, are those halved prawns ?

    By the way, did you later approach the family of the mee rebus
    guy at collyer quay , the link I had sent you.

  3. Yes tekka market has many nice food stalls. I love the Teochew porridge along the same row as this prawn noodle stall.
