Sometimes, all we want is something relatively light and yet still tasty. Yong tau foo fits the bill for me. Here's one simple yong tau foo at ABC Bak Kut Teh stall 天香來肉骨茶 in Fong Yem Coffee Shop in Johor Jaya that I like.

During one of our visits to ABC Bak Kut Teh stall, we had a side of their yong tau foo. Just a small bowl with a few pieces, but we liked it's simplicity and came back for it. I thought this simple yong tau fu is a good option when we just want a light meal.

ABC Bak Kut Teh stall serves many other dishes besides their main stay BKT. They have curry pork, curry chicken, asam fish, asam fish head, tofu, and yong tau fu. The stall holder Kent said that many of his customers come as a family group, so he has to have something for everyone - hence, the range of dishes at the little stall.

The lady boss who is Hakka, makes ten different types of Hakka yong tau foo and they sell it at RM1.30 per piece. The yong tau foo pieces are fried till slightly browned before they are served in a bowl of soup.

We had 10 pieces, one of each type they have and it came to a grand total of RM13.

I like this soup - it's just a simple broth made by boiling anchovies, soya bean and bang kuang 芒光 together. The cloudy broth is sweet complemented with anchovy flavours.

The Hakka style fillings are quite generous. It's a blend of minced pork and salted Threadfin fish 马友鱼. (This is all natural - not those ivory white "fish" paste bulked up with starch and flavoured with chemicals.)

The filling is made mainly with lean pork, so it feels tender but quite dense. The flavour is naturally sweet complemented with savouriness from the salted Threadfin.

Stuffed chili pepper is my favourite yong tau foo piece 😋

👍If you just want something light and yet tasty for dinner, then consider ABC Bak Kut Teh's yong tau foo. Alternatively, if you are here for their popular bak kut teh or curry pork ribs, remember they have a nice yong tau foo side dish as well.
