Western Fine Dining in Johor Bahru JB at SPROUT ⭐⭐⭐⭐✱

Last night, I joined friends at a private party held in SPROUT, a modern European fine dining restaurant in Johor Bahru. This was my second time at SPROUT ☜ and I like it here.

SPROUT is the little gem at the corner lot of a short row of 5 drive-by, inconspicuous old shophouses just off Jalan Tebrau heading towards the city centre.

(Caution: To come here, you have to signal left early, slow down to slightly faster than a crawl and be prepared to turn left into the very narrow side road at Kim Teng Park. This is an accident prone road junction.

Parking is street side and the end of the side road.)

Owner Chef Mui and his team whipped up a great fine dining experience for 40 of us. Chef Mui honed his craft in Copenhagen and Singapore, before starting SPROUT last year.

Grilled crispy sourdough with smooth savoury chicken liver mousse while we waited for the session to roll.

The dinner started with soft sweet pumpkin slathered with savoury bacon jam, springy crunchy shrimp tail dressed with tangy mango salsa set on savoury crumbly squid ink cracker.

Grilled crunchy juicy asparagus, braised fennel and slow cooked quail eggs dressed with orange vinaigrette.

We were getting hungry after the flavoursome appetisers - we were glad that the mains followed shortly 😄

Grilled wild caught senanggin fish (Ikan Kurau, 马友鱼 or 午鱼), confit squid, prawns, roasted sweetcorn and tomatoes with minestrone.

All too soon it was dessert of banana cake, roasted banana sorbet, peanut butter mousse, sago chips and peanut crumble.

Our private party costs RM180 per head with BYO (bring your own) wine. The young service staff was attentive, friendly and earnest.

4-Star (out of 5). In JB, SPROUT is the go to place for modern European fine dining. The food is pleasingly plated, the techniques are interesting, the dishes are creatively designed and the flavours delights and surprises. SPROUT is good at any time and I think the best time to visit is during not so busy days when the chef can fully focus attention on each single plate presented.
