Asam Pedas Tambak in Batu Pahat Johor ⭐⭐⭐✱✱

Yesterday, while at Pacific Mall in Batu Pahat, we bumped into Johor Kaki reader, Dr Kevin Khoo. Needless to say, I won't pass up a golden opportunity to ask a home town boy about the best eats in Batu Pahat. Hearing that we are on the hunt for great asam pedas, Kevin suggested that we check out the row of asam pedas stalls at Jalan Hamidon, off Jalan Rahmat near the Main Post Office.

There are at least 3 asam pedas stalls along Jalan Hamidon. (They also serve nasi campur - the Malay equivalent of "economic rice".)

It was lunch time. By instinct, we opted for the stall with the most customers, which was Asam Pedas Tambak. As I am the kiasu (extra cautious) type, I telephoned Kevin to double confirm - yes, "it's the stall in the middle" - which is  Asam Pedas Tambak.

The stall holders running Asam Pedas Tambak are youthful, friendly and full of enthusiasm.

We had a huge Ikan Jenahak cooked in asam pedas. Ikan Jenahak (Golden Snapper in English or 黑鲷 in Chinese) is a lower grade fish than Ikan Merah (Red Snapper 红鲷). Types of snapper fish 👈 click

The Jenahak fish head came with plenty of meat at the belly, neck and back.

The asam pedas broth was watery and well balanced with mildly savoury spicy sweet flavours with slight tangy notes. You will like this if you like gentler tasting asam pedas.

The fish was very fresh. The thick ivory white flesh was tender, juicy and naturally sweet (though not to the same degree as Ikan Merah). Next time, I shall try their Ikan Pari (Stingray).

Our total bill including asam pedas fish head, fried omelette, teh O, and rice came to RM40.

3-Star (out of 5). Asam Pedas Tambak is a local favourite in the world of Batu Pahat asam pedas fish. Centrally located with a charming local street side ambiance. The well balanced asam pedas is mildly flavoured and not overly spicy. The fish is, of course, very fresh. Thanks Kevin for the good recommendation.
