Last night, we went to a restaurant known as Fat Chef in Kulai together with good friends.
Jalan Seri Putra 1, Bandar Putra, Kulai.
Owner Chef Calvin has been running Fat Chef with wife Lily (on his right in the picture). Calvin is a graduate of At-Sunrice academy in Singapore.
Fat Chef Restaurant is simply furnished inside but it is bright and comfortable.
Chef Calvin launched us straight into his signature "Land, Sea and Air" dish.
Calvin originally created this dish for his sister's birthday. After he posted a picture of the dish on his personal Facebook profile, Calvin received many enquiries about it. After very positive feedback from family, friends and customers about "Land, Sea and Air", this dish is now a permanent feature in Fat Chef's menu. Indeed, it is their signature dish and claim to fame.
The land contingent is represented by New Zealand lamb chops and German pork sausages.
A local spiny lobster baked with cheese led the sea contingent. The spiny lobster was supported by mussels and salmon steak with salted egg yolk in flying the maritime flag.
Fat Chef's signature fried chicken chop leads in the air department. (Do chicken represent the land or air? 😕 )
Fried quails complete the air component.
There's sweet caramelised bananas with chocolate sauce for dessert.
Fat Chef's signature "Land, Sea and Air" is hugely popular especially for parties. There is something for everyone in the platter. This dish is sold according to number of pax:
👉 4 pax RM288
👉 6 pax RM418
👉 8 pax RM528.
Actually, I am quite stumped by this dish Gu Lou Yok in Ice (price RM18.90) 😃 It is classic gu lou yok 咕咾肉 Cantonese style battered, deep fried sweet and sour pork buried in a mound of crushed ice.
The crushed ice is supposed to make the fried batter outside crispier.
By itself, without the ice, I found Fat Chef's gu lou yuk very good - the outside was crispy while inside, the well marinated savoury sweet sour meat was warm, tender and juicy. The ice gave the pieces of gu lou yuk a coldness outside which I am a little unaccustomed to. Try it. I understand that this dish is quite the rage in Hong Kong, China and KL.
Seafood tom yam made with coconut juice 泰式酸辣海鲜椰盅 (price RM29.90). Chef Calvin's rendition is mildly savoury spicy with sweetness from the coconut juice and seafood.
This la la clam soup made with coconut juice is a Must Try 4-Star dish. It's refreshing coconut juice sweetness layered with fresh la la clam sweetness. I drank this la la soup till the coconut was dry and enjoyed it to the last drop.
My gracious friends are not fans of lamb but ordered this Herbal Lamb 药膳草羊煲 (price RM38) knowing that I am a lamb lover. Thank you 😊
I am so glad my friends ordered this Herbal Lamb, as this is one of the best that I have tasted in Malaysia and Singapore.
The herbal broth has a nice medium body with some weight coming from dissolved gelatin. The broth has nicely balanced savoury sweet flavours with herbalness and underlying subtle lamb gaminess. Fresh mushrooms and goji berries add layers to the broth's sweetness. The tender lamb with bones in was tender, juicy and flavoursome.
If you like Hainanese style herbal lamb, then it is worth a trip to Kulai for this i.e. a 4-Star dish.
Soft Shelled Prawns imported from Japan (RM32 for 5). They are battered and deep fried. The sweet prawns with mildly savoury buttery batter can be eaten whole with soft shell on.
Abacus dish which is a Hakka staple (RM12). Chef Calvin makes this abacus personally by mashing yam and mixing with tapioca flour. The abacus are cooked by boiling, and then stir fried with minced pork, dried shrimps, mushroom and sauces.
4-Star (out of 5). Fat Chef is a nice, little, simple family oriented restaurant. The food is innovative and delicious, and reasonably priced. No GST and no service charge. I especially love their herbal lamb and coconut juice la la the most. The "Land, Sea and Air" platter is also a lovely way to eat together with family and friends.
