Well, the look of The Toast & Roast signature premium char siew already speaks for itself 😃
The Toast & Roast was founded by Mr KC Ong in 2009 with recipes he developed himself.
The Toast & Roast has been here in this little neighbourhood at Jalan SS2/72, Petaling Jaya since 2009.
Lee Mei, Mr KC Ong's daughter now runs The Toast & Roast following the recipes and old school methods developed by her dad. Mr KC Ong still comes to the shop everyday "to kaypoh kaypoh" his son Mark said 😃
Actually, the knack for great char siew runs in the family. Mr KC Ong's wife is the cousin of Mr Bill Khoon, the owner of Famous Seremban Favourites also in Petaling Jaya. Bill Khoon's nephew, Kai Koh is the co-owner of Roast Paradise in Singapore. Most Singapore foodies would have heard of Roast Paradise. Though each shop have their own style of char siew, you will notice a bit of shared DNA.
Our brunch - we had two sets of char siew, roast (actually smoked) chicken and Hakka noodles.
The Toast & Roast's signature premium char siew is just marvellous.
This cut is from char siew which hung closer to the charcoal fire at the bottom of the "Apollo oven" which is a form of Tandoor oven.
On the gleaming outside, there is a slight crisp and a bit of tackiness from the caramelised sweet savoury marination. Bits of char at the edges and tips, added a layer of toasty taste. Inside, the meat is tender and moist, surrounded by warm juicy fat. The sweet savoury marinate complements the natural sweetness of fresh pork without overwhelming it.
Gleaming golden ropes of char siew which were roasted higher up in the "Apollo oven". It's further from the charcoal fire, hence there is no char - just an alluring sheen on the surface.
The same light crisp, gummy mouth feel outside with sweet savoury juicy tenderness inside. Sans the toasty taste of char.
Golden or char? It's all a matter of personal preference 😁
The siew yok (roast pork belly) is also nice - crackly skin, tender meat, juicy fat with mild well balanced savoury flavours and natural porky sweetness.
At first sight, I wasn't too keen on this roast chicken as I had too much food already. I just took a piece to taste and woh ho!
I mean..... tender and juicy roast chicken is not hard to find, especially in KL. But, The Roast & Toast smoked this with hickory wood charcoal, infusing the tender juicy meat and crisp skin with a pronounced hickory flavour.
It's a surprise, the delightful kind - completely changing the taste profile of typical roast chicken. ok... that's only if you like the taste of hickory - I love this 😋
The Toast & Roast's Hakka noodles comes with a mild savoury slick sauce topped with minced pork and spongy bits of fried fish cake that looked like little toasted popcorn.
The flat yellow noodles were done soft al dente. Coated with mild savoury lardy sauce, it's a tasty carb to eat with their char siew, siew yok and roast (smoked) chicken.
Crispy suikow with tender minced pork and crunchy black fungus 木耳 filling.
Fish roll with crispy fried fu-chuk (bean curd skin).
The price list for your reference.
4-Star (out of 5). The Toast & Roast's outstanding premium char siew is worth a special trip for. Also must try their unique roast (smoked) chicken, especially if you like the taste of hickory. Their Hakka mee is good too and goes well with their star dish - the premium char siew.
