This morning driving from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru, we decided to have our breakfast in Seremban instead of KL, so as to avoid being caught in the Malaysian capital city's traffic.

We cruised around the laid back Seremban city centre until we spotted this rather busy looking corner coffee shop. (Actually, we were craving Tow Kee's Hakka noodles but locals told us that both Tow Kee stalls are closed as the owners have fallen sick 😟 )

There were a wanton mee stall and a fishball noodle stall. Both looked popular with customers, and almost everyone was having coffee, soft boiled eggs and toasts too.

The lady boss was extremely busy making coffee and tea.

They have traditional kaya and butter toast with white bread loaf, buns and also oatmeal ciabatta.

We decided to stop here for breakfast (after stopping and checking a few coffee shops).

We ordered from the fish ball noodle stall and also the coffee, eggs and toasts. (We may try the wanton mee when we visit next time.)

Two elderly gentlemen joined us at our table - table sharing is the norm in Malaysia, especially at popular eateries. We soon engaged in cheerful banter and our new friends shared with us many tips about where are the best eats in Seremban 😋

Sun Meng 新明 is their long time favourite coffee shop. The old coffee shop has been around for over half a century and our new friends have been here every morning for their coffee, toasts and eggs for the past 30 years. They remember that the lady boss was then a teen.

As we ate and chatted, we soon fell in love with Sun Meng too 😄

My usual - kopi C kosong - price RM2.20.

It's thick Nanyang coffee. Full bodied and bitter, sweetened and smoothened with an overdose of evaporated milk. An old school pick me up - not a health tonic.

I liked it so much that I had another in my coffee mug to drink while I drive - my decades old bad habit of driving with a mug of hot coffee.

Two soft boiled kampung chicken eggs for RM2. First, give it a dash of light soy sauce.

Then, a puff of white pepper.

Oh... this was so good.... the kampung chicken eggs were done just right. The orangey yolk and white were runny and creamy - it has more body than regular farm (broiler) chicken eggs. The sweet eggy taste was strong and balanced with savouriness (not saltiness) from the soy sauce. The white pepper gave the eggs a hint of spice.

I enjoyed this so much that I treated myself to a second bowl of two eggs 😃

This simple kaya toast was great too 😃

The old school white bread slices were toasted till it was dry and light like a biscuit. The fresh kaya (coconut jam) spread was creamy and had just enough sweetness. The butter added a gentle savouriness and grease that smoothed out the dry toast's brittle coarseness.

Sun Meng's kaya toast is a winsome rendition of the classic.

We like this fish ball stall too and shall cover it in a future post 😃

4-Star (out of 5). I think Seremban is the perfect stopover for breakfast coming out from KL and heading to JB in the morning. Seremban city centre is just 10 minutes drive from the toll gate (so no long detours required). Sun Meng serves great coffee, kaya toasts and excellent soft boiled kampung chicken eggs. Sun Meng is a local favourite.

I firmly believe that taste is subjective and so, warmly welcome differing viewpoints as it makes this blog better :-D But, I disapprove negative comments that are anonymous or hide behind fake identities. I feel that that is unethical in the same way as speaking ill of others behind their backs. I look forward to all your comments :-D Thank you. (Date: 18 Dec 2015)
