Whenever I am in a taxi, somehow we ended up chatting happily with the driver about.... what else.... but food.... As we near our destination, I often ask the driver to name his top 3 favourite food stalls. Today in JB, our taxi driver Siang named Hwa Mei ("Ah B") bak kut teh, Lai Kee fish ball noodles and Yap Kee wanton mee in Permas Jaya.

I have eaten at Hwa Mei and Lai Kee many times before but have not been to Yap Kee (Permas) yet. So today, we found our way to the Yap Kee wanton mee stall in Si-Hu coffee shop which is in a quiet corner of Permas Jaya near the AEON JUSCO mall.

Stall holder Mr Tan have been selling wanton mee for over 20 years. He uses egg noodles made by Yap Kee 葉记 which is a top noodle supplier in JB. Many stalls in JB use Yap Kee's egg noodles. Even the chili sauce is from Yap Kee as it is specially formulated for their noodles. Every Yap Kee stall uses the same egg noodles and chili sauce, so the difference in taste between the stalls depend mainly on the skill of the hawker in cooking the noodles.

Mr. Tan's is one the most popular Yap Kee WTM stalls in JB. Siang told me that he sometimes had to wait one hour for his WTM.

Today, we started with two sets of wanton mee which come with a bowl of soup and wantons.

I like my noodles to have a robust tasting sauce with some spicy kick. So, we asked for a slightly spicy sauce 少辣 but the sauce still tasted just mildly savoury spicy with hints of lard.

There were no greens in the bowl of noodles except for chopped scallion.

The highlight was the egg noodles. Though they were slender and not that heavy, they had a nice soft spring.

We like the texture of Mr Tan's noodles so much that we added another bowl of noodles, this time "extra spicy" 加辣.

The noodles were just as good, with the same soft crunchy spring. The more spicy sauce with extra chili added tended to mask the delicate flavours of the egg noodles as well as the lard and aromatic cooked oil. So, the "extra spicy" noodle tasted more flat.

So, the earlier slight spicy sauce still agrees best with my taste buds but we have to be attentive to the subtle savoury spicy and eggy flavours to appreciate it properly.

Mr Tan also has an "original" flavour 原味 version which is just lard and aromatic cooked oil. Then, there is this "black" version with more dark soy sauce (this was another customer's order).

The char siew is lean and doesn't have much flavour except for a slight savoury sweetness.

The wantons were simple and very nice with porky and sesame flavour. A pinch of tender minced fat and lean pork folded in a thin soft smooth egg and flour dough envelope. The bowl of simple clear pork and chicken stock was good too.

So good, we ordered another big bowl of just wantons and soup 😃

Altogether, two of us had 3 sets of wanton mee and one bowl of wanton soup for RM20.30 (2017 price).

👉 Love the soft crunchy mouth feel of this Yap Kee wanton mee stall in Permas Jaya. The old school wantons with simple porky and sesame flavours were lovely too.
