Best Crispy Prawn Crackers in Johor Jaya Seroja 炸虾饼

Best Crispy Prawn Crackers in Johor Jaya Seroja 炸虾饼

Updated 28 May 2019. Finally tracked down the Johor Jaya fried prawn cracker stall after they moved to Restoran Soon Lee Lai coffee shop, 9 months ago. The stall opens from 10am - 4pm (rest on Monday and Friday) but there are often unscheduled off days. I missed them many times before I finally found them opened today.

Restoran Soon Lee Lai coffee shop is a laid back, dingy place. Just 3 stalls here - a Teochew porridge stall, a noodle stall, and the fried prawn cracker stall.

The fresh white prawns that go into the fried prawn crackers.

The RM2 prawn crackers with extra white prawns are made from scratch at the stall.

The prawn crackers are freshly deep fried right there at the stall.

Two of us, we got a stack of 6 - two with chives plus prawns and 4 with just prawns. RM2 per piece.

The prawn crackers have a slight crisp outside and a bit tender inside. The cracker tastes savoury sweet with the soft white prawns adding a bit more sweetness. The shell of the white prawn is as soft as its flesh. The chives added a subtle green taste and aroma.

The basic prawn cracker is the same, minus the chives. Both versions are good, though I personally prefer the basic one - just simple savoury sweet plus taste of white prawn sweetness.

Information for you 👌 Nice fried prawn crackers to try your luck when you are around the Johor Jaya area.

Here is another of my favourite fried prawn crackers in Johor Bahru. This is a pasar malam stall that operates in a different night market every evening. Be prepared to queue but it's worth it 👈 click

Archive post dated 14 May 2017. Hae piah ji or prawn cracker has always been one of my favourite snacks since childhood. So, I was quite excited when Elsie Yap shared about a little pop up stall in Johor Jaya Seroja selling these beautiful fried prawn and chive crackers.

Swee (beautiful) right?

The pop up stall owned by the Ng family operates from inside the premises of DM Glass & Aluminium Enterprise at the junction of Jalan Seroja 39 and 37.

The prawn crackers are pre-fried and are freshly crisped by frying a second time when there are orders.

Once crisped to a golden brown, the prawns are rested briefly for it to cool and to let residual oil drip.

The prawn cracker cools very quickly and I can hold it in my hand. They are not too greasy at all 😄

The golden brown prawn cracker is crisp and thin.

My favourite way of eating hae piah ji is to hold the whole round piece in my hand and bite it off bit by bit. But, today I opted to have it cut to bite size as I needed to keep my hands free for photo taking.

The prawn cracker is crispy. It tastes just mildly savoury sweet and the sweetness from the fresh small white prawns gives it another layer of natural sweetness.

Very nice.

I like their chili sauce too. It is freshly made with red chili pepper and garlic etc. I can smell the rather pungent garlic aroma. That's a good thing!

I also had a chive cracker which had to made and fried on the spot on order.

The chive cracker is delicious too. But, personally my preference is for the prawn cracker.
