Jang Won Korea BBQ. Stulang Laut. JB

Ask Johoreans to recommend Korean restaurants and Jang Won is sure to be one of those mentioned. Jang Won is one of the oldest Korean restaurants in JB still in business and still popular among locals. It is well liked by Singaporeans too because it is located at Stulang Laut which is near the JB CIQ (less than 5km).

Jang Won is on the second level of the aged, rather rundown De' Stulang building. Gotta climb stairs to get to the restaurant.

One of the draws of Jang Won is the view of the Johor Strait and Singapore across the water. This al fresco area is good only at night as it is much too hot under the blazing sun. It should be great at night 😄🌛

Don't worry if you are here during lunch, the compact interior is air conditioned, clean and bright. I like it that Jang Won still uses authentic, old school dining pits 😄 It is very comfortable and relaxing.

We had the 2-person set. There are different courses catering to different size groups. The menu is in 5 languages 😄

In accordance with the custom in Korean restaurants, banchan or small dishes were served first - there were 10 in the set.

I like the kimchi here. The cabbage was soft and moist, enveloped with thick robustly savoury spicy seasoning.

The meats are grilled over red hot charcoal on the tabletop BBQ set. A staff set up the grill and did all the cooking. There was very little smoke and oil splatter from the grill.

First meat dish was Samgyeopsal. The frozen pork belly was laid on the hot grill without marination and allowed to sizzle until the strip of skin, fat and meat was slightly browned.

On its own, the grilled pork belly was tender and tasted savoury sweet. Nice.

The grilled pork belly is eaten with raw garlic, pickles and spicy sauce folded into a crunchy fresh green lettuce leaf.

Dwaeji Galbi (pork spare rib).

The savoury sweet tender juicy spare rib meat is great for ssam (Korea style lettuce wrap).

I like this ssamjang - savoury spicy bean paste. It makes everything tastes better and I was even eating it just by itself (as it was not overly salty). Nice.

The set came with Gyeran Jjim (Korean steamed egg) even though it is not stated in the menu 😄 Homely mild tasting dish.

I like Jang Won's kimchi-jjigae (kimchi stew) as the stew was thick and robustly savoury spicy in deep layers. I was eating lots of rice with this delicious kimchi stew.

As I love oxtail soup, we ordered a Kkori Gomtang. However, it was a let down. The cloudy soup had good body and sweet beefy flavour but the oxtail meat was tough like jute ropes and tasteless.

👉 We like the grilled pork belly and spare ribs at Jang Won. At RM75+ a set we can have a nice hearty meal of ssam (lettuce wrap) with small dishes. Add a couple of bowls of rice and it will be a complete filling meal for us. We like the kimchi here too.

Our total bill came to RM112.35. The 2-person set at RM75+ is reasonable and competitively priced.

Please share your favourite Korean BBQ place. We are on a Korean BBQ hunt 😄

  1. Have been eating here since before Korean food was popular and Korean restaurants started mushrooming around JB. Until now, they're still the best and they're quite generous with the side dishes too. Light-tasting Korean beer goes well with the BBQ stuff!
