Taiping Sepetang Fish Porridge in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah 太平十八丁鱼粥

Fish soup is one of my favourite guilt free dishes as it is healthy without sacrificing taste (relatively speaking.. lah). So, I am very happy when I come across Taiping Sepetang Fish Porridge in TUTA Johor Bahru - it's nice 😋

Taiping Sepetang 太平十八丁茶餐室 is a busy coffee shop in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah as it has several popular stalls such as the wanton mee, mee rebus, roti canai etc.

Taiping Sepetang Fish Porridge is one of the local favourites in this popular kopitiam.

Stall holder Ms. Beh hails from Kuala Sepetang (formerly known as Port Weld) which is a coastal fishing town in Perak state. Kuala Sepetang is adjacent to Matang, another town in Perak famous for seafood. Both towns are near to Taiping. The fish porridge and soup sold in Ms. Beh's stall are based on her family's recipes.

Ms. Beh prepares the fresh fish every day, so we get fresh fish all the time 😄

We had a bowl of fish slices and another bowl of fish belly. (Price RM18 for all these.) There were actually two bowls of rice but we returned one bowl as we wanted to cut down on eating rice (in support of Singapore's "war on diabetes mah.. 😜 ).

This is actually a fish porridge stall but I requested for the rice and fish to be served separately. The stall holders were very busy but they obliged us with smiles. Very good customer service. Very troublesome customer 😛

The soup has medium body and is cloudy. It is made by boiling pork prime ribs 龍骨. Before serving, it is dressed with finely julienned fresh ginger, chopped scallion and aromatic oil (infused with flavour from fried garlic). The soup tasted mildly savoury sweet from the pork ribs and a bit of sweetness from the fresh fish.

It is redundant to repeat that the fish is fresh 😄 The meat was tenderly smooth and tasted naturally sweet. Exactly the way I like to eat fish 😋

We also had a bowl of fish balls which we also liked (price RM5.50).

We like the clear soup with subtle natural fish sweetness.

The fish balls made with Ikan Parang were fresh and had a nice spring to the bite. The flavour was subtle natural sweetness.

  3. Hi, Joe
Let me to answer you, there only one type fish that is “Ang Koi”.
Yes, have sell uncooked fishball. 1kg is RM28 (1 ball is RM0.50 if less than 1kg you order).

  4. Just went recently, the stall is still open after 12 noon. But the workers were doing the cooking, and the fish was overcooked. So best to go earlier when the lady boss is doing the cooking.
