Taiping Sepetang Roti Prata. One of JB Best Roti Canai

I eat roti prata (known as roti canai in Malaysia) often as roti prata stalls are everywhere in Singapore and Malaysia. I rarely return to any particular stall as most roti prata stalls are good enough and few really stand out from the rest. But, the roti parta stall at Taiping Sepetang coffee shop in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah is one which I would return to when I am in the area.

The roti prata stall is at Taiping Sepetang coffee shop where many locals gather for breakfast and lunch as it has many popular food stalls such as wanton mee, mee rebus, fish soup etc.

Mr. Vellu is the prata man at Taping Sepetang. He worked in Singapore's Mr. Prata outlet in Bedok before coming back to JB last year.

Vellu kneads his own dough at Taiping Sepetang whereas at Mr. Prata in Singapore, the dough is factory supplied.

Vellu uses a blend of ghee and vegetable oil to fry his prata. I like this as most prata stalls in JB use either margarine or vegetable oil. Ghee gives the best crispness for prata.

Vellu spreads the dough wide and folds it into a flat bread which is pan fried in ghee and oil till it is crisped and browned outside.

The prata with patches of browned sear outside is served on a shiny steel platter with curry - Vellu has fish, chicken and vegetable curries for his prata.

Vellu's prata is crisp and quite dry outside. Inside, it has layers which are more moist which give the layered bread a nice chewy bite. Vellu's prata is not greasy at all.

Vellu's curries - there's chicken, fish and vegetarian - all flavoursome. Loaded with spices but not overly hot.

Crisp, chewy bread wet with spicy curry - the perfect couple.

    2. Hi, actually he is an employee there. Not boss. I know the owner very well and owners's wife who cooked all the curries and sides. Even the dough's recipe by the owner actually. So as for me I think the owner also should get some appreciation. I'm not condemn it but it will be good if the owner also in this pictures. Anyways the food was so good. Especially their thosai and chutney.

  2. The prata was nice and crispy, but it was cold when it was served after we waited for quite a while. The fish and vege gravies tasted a bit dilute, but this is the case with most roti canai stalls in JB.
