Tried & Tasted Best Char Kway Teow in Johor ⭐⭐⭐⭐



Char kway teow is a popular dish in Johor (just like in Singapore and throughout Malaysia). CKT stalls are everywhere - most kopitiam have one CKT. But, good char kway teow stalls in Johor (and also in Singapore) are like rare gems - there are just a precious few among the dozens. Here are the best top of my mind char kway teow stalls in Johor, after blogging about 21 stalls and tasting a few hundred times.

Note: This is a tried and tasted list. I personally tasted all the char kway teow listed here many times, and did not copy and paste from other people's blogs, Facebook etc.



Pasar Kia Char Kuey Teow 巴沙仔炒粿条面

One of the oldest CKT stalls in Johor. Fried by the fourth generation now, with the third gen helping out. I like it that the sauce is caramelized, enveloping the noodles with robust savoury flavours and toasty taste. This rendition is slightly wet. Now located at Cedar Point where parking is much easier compared to Meldrum Walk (its previous location).

Penang Goreng Kuay Teow @ Sri Tebrau Market

Another old JB char kway teow stalwart. Slightly drier, tacky type. Savoury toasty with some wok hei despite not using lard. This stall offers the option of kampung duck eggs (in addition to the usual kampung chicken egg). This CKT has many layers of savouriness with subtle underlying sweetness. Mr Khor and son Ryan both work at the stall. Fans cannot stop debating who is better, father or son. You say?

杨家美食.槟城之味

Penang style CKT. Relatively dry, has layered savoury flavours from a blend of soy and fish sauce, with a bit of wok hei. Formerly in Taman Perling at the hugely popular Leong Seng Huat kopitiam, dubbed "Little Penang" by locals. This CKT is in Impian Emas now.

88 Char Kway Teow (stall in Restoran Dwi Lapan kopitiam)

This stall offers the option of duck eggs with their lard fried kway teow. Garlic, lup cheong and prawn provide the aromatic layers under the caramelised savoury sauce and toasty sear. Brininess from blood cockles round up the flavours.

Char Kway Teow stall in Restoran Tien Tien kopitiam

Popular Penang style CKT in Taman Pelangi. Lady boss wanted to give up CKT and switch trade but support of fans kept her going. Folks like her wok hei and generous use of lard. The rice noodles are well infused with caramelised garlic and savoury sauce flavours with an overlay of toasty taste.

Penang Fried Kway Teow @ Kim Ling 金岭 Coffee Shop

One of the char kway teow stalwarts of Taman Perling. Simple CKT of rice noodles, prawn, bean sprout, blood cockles and chives. The savoury salty sauce is seared into the rice noodles infusing it with caramelised toasty savoury flavour.

Penang Char Kia Teow Stall in Hong Kong Boy Kopitiam 香港仔美食中心

阿诚槟城炒粿条 is the only charcoal fried CKT in this list. Nice wok hei imparting a toasty sear on the rice noodles and caramelised savoury sauce with underlying sweetness. Has blood cockles, waxed sausage, chives and bean sprouts. Hong Kong Boy kopitiam is in a lively eating zone in Johor Jaya town which is busy from morning till night.

Kulai Main Street 古來大街炒粿條

This is an institution in Kulai. Known as "Main street char kway teow" but it is actually along a small inside street. Opens only in the evenings for a couple of hours before everything is sold out. Very basic savoury CKT - kway teow, bean sprouts and blood cockles with a savoury sauce tossed and turned in a sizzling wok, that's all. Townsfolk's favourite.
