Beriani Daging (beef)
Today, my friend Boon Lin brought me to his favourite nasi beriani shop in Johor Bahru. Boon Lin has been eating at Roslin Beriani House in Kebun Teh since he was a child.
The taste hasn't changed much since the old days, Boon Lin reminisced.
I took a spoonful of the basmati rice and curry gravy, and I got immediate flash backs.
Funny.
Everything about this beriani rice reminds me of my favourite Mohd Shah nasi beriani in Batu Pahat, I told Boon Lin.
Beriani Kambing (lamb)
This was my colourful plate of beriani with mutton rendang and thick curry gravy.
The lamb with bone in was tender and saturated with mild spice aroma.
The long basmati rice grains were moist with broth, and slightly greasy. The grains were in a loose heap and they separate easily. The grains were tender but still have a slight nutty bite.
Beriani Daging (beef)
Boon Lin's beriani beef with the piece of beef rendang hidden under the heap of basmati rice and thick curry gravy.
I tasted a piece of beef rendang from Boon Lin's plate. It was tender, moist and flavourful. Boon Lin was full of praise for it.
The freshly made achar served with the beriani was crunchy and juicy. The cut vegetables had their natural flavours complemented by a slight tanginess and sweetness.
We were served this side dish. A cooked pineapple slice topped with a large chili pepper and doused with a little curry. The juicy pineapple tasted very slightly tangy, sweet, and spicy. Nice!
Nice crackers to go with our beriani.
We were served this small tub of a lime pickle. It tasted tangy, sweet, and salty. I quite enjoyed this appetiser too.
After our scrumptious meal, we went to chat with the friendly owners.
Puan Roslin is the granddaughter of the founder who started this nasi beriani shop in 1983. Enche' Mustaffa is Puan Roslin's husband who had been running the shop since 1988.
When I mentioned that this nasi beriani is very similar to the famous Mohd Shah nasi beriani in Batu Pahat, Puan Roslin replied that Enche' Mohd Shah was one of her grandfather's workers before he started his own stall in Batu Pahat in 1986.
Ahhh... that explains the similarities :D So, now I don't have to go to Batu Pahat to get the same type of nasi beriani.
I took a quick look around the simple shop.
The tray of lamb rendang with bone.
Delicious beef rendang is never very photogenic.
For chicken lovers, there is chicken rendang.
They even have fish, so Roslin Beriani House has something for almost anyone.
My friend Boon Lin graciously took care of the tab. Our total bill came to RM26, including drinks. Thank you bro Boon Lin :-D This is delicious!
->> Nasi beriani fans, this is a Must Try. Tender spice perfumed rendang on flavoursome aromatic basmati rice, the taste reminds me of the famous Mohd Shah nasi beriani in Batu Pahat.
If you are shopping at the popular Angsana Plaza, pop over to MS Beryani nearby. It is another nasi briyani in Johor with the Mohd Shah DNA. While writing this I just realised that MS means Mohd Shah (why didn't I realise this earlier ๐ ) ๐ click
