Beer Market Clarke Quay Singapore
I was invited to a food tasting at Beer Market at Clarke Quay, Singapore. It was a group tasting session to try out Beer Market's newly launched food menu together with several Singapore bloggers.
Beer Market already popular for their wide range of local and exotic foreign beers aims to add substantial dining options for it's customers.
Beer Market enlisted veteran Executive Chef Steven who has over 20 years of international experience in the kitchen and in F & B management for this venture. Chef Steven came across as a level headed person with a daring can-do spirit when it comes to food innovation.
Seafood Shooters (SGD22.90++). We started off with an ice bucket of fresh prawns, salmon sashimi cubes, and crabmeat in shooter glasses served with a cold bottle of Tiger Radler beer.
Chef Steven handpicks his prawns from the wet market to ensure it's freshness, which is highly commendable as most restaurants relied on the convenience of delivered supplies. (I always asks the chef about his/her supply chain as it is fundamental to the quality of the food served :P )
The Tiger Radler beer tasted slightly tangy, sweet and fizzy. Eating seafood with sweet sourish fizzy beer is an interesting experience but I am more a old style bitter beer person.
The BM Rojak Platter (SGD39.90++). There was crispy luncheon (meat) fries, crispy spring rolls, bacon wrapped potatoes and cherry tomatoes, fried fish skin, Thai fish sticks, and baby wieners.
Essential beer food. The flavours were mainly from salt and grease, and texture was various forms of crisps from deep frying in hot oil.
Beer Market put in a lot of effort to come up with interesting house blended dips. Rightly so, as dips are key to good beer food.
We sampled Beer Market’s "Four Heavenly King Dipping Sauces" - Tartar, Honey Mustard, "Shiok", and BTH (spicy buay tahan), as well as Cheesy Salsa and Truffle Sauce.
Everyone present was unanimous that the Thai inspired signature "Shiok" sauce was the best. It was a delightful creamy blend of tangy, sweet, spicy and savoury that makes anything deep fried dipped into it more palatable, "shiok" even.
Chicken Truffle (SGD15.90++). Tender chicken chop laid on a creamy potato mash bathed in mushroom gravy and drizzled with truffle oil.
The chicken chop was hidden under a blanket of mushroom and onions, and half buried in the potato mash and mushroom gravy.
I like Beer Market's Sizzling Salmon (SGD18.90++). The outside of the grilled salmon slab may look overdone but the meat inside was tender and soft.
Indeed, the salmon was a lovely soft pink, moist and juicy.
Grandma’s Fish and Chips (SGD13.90++).
Fish and chips simply done the straight forward way, no tricks, no frills.
The golden crust had just the right thickness and crispy texture, and the white flesh was thick and moist.
Plain but likable.
The steak underneath that messy clump of greens actually had a nicely seared, caramelised surface. This BM No-Nonsense Steak was one of the highlights of the day for me.
This tender juicy steak nicely done medium rare was just marvelous. At SGD22.90++, it's really a hard to beat, no nonsense, honest good steak.
I highly recommend Beer Market's No-Nonsense Steak.
Chicken Rice Pizza (SGD17.90++).
Didn't quite cut it for me. The crust topped with starchy greasy rice made a sticky, salty mess. The whole thing was so salty I couldn't taste the shreds of chicken or what other toppings from the lumpy rice or soggy crust.
Salted Egg Seafood Pizza (SGD21.90++).
With all that salt, I couldn't tell if the baked shrimps and other seafood were fresh or not. The crust was thin and tasted flat.
Midnight Seafood Rice (SGD13.90++).
This was the first time I tried squid ink fried rice. Beer Market stir fried the plain white rice with plenty of soft and bouncy baby squids and lovely squid ink. As a fan of squid ink pasta, I think the idea of squid ink fried rice worked really well.
Love this.
BM Beef Horfun (SGD14.90++). An interesting "fusion" experiment of tender Australian sirloin beef strips stir-fried with kway teow noodles and served in French onion soup gravy. Sweet and savoury flavours paired with various tender textures from the beef, onions and kway teow.
The tender beef and onion sauce worked really well for me though wok hei was not pronounced in the noodles :D
Of course, Beer Market is about beers and they have many imported specialty and exotic varieties. I'll be happy to come here with the gang just to try out all the different types of beers.
Around the world in 80 beers :P
The tasting session was conducted during the day and the restaurant was closed to the public (opens only at night). As such, I am unable to comment on the ambiance at Beer Market.
I especially liked the grilled salmon, beef horfun, squid ink fried rice, no nonsense steak, and of course, the beers!
Some of the food was slightly heavy on salt. I guess this is perfect if you intend to wash it through your system with lots of beers :D
