Sate Jawa Inul Aneka Selera Satay in Larkin Johor Bahru JK1421
Woohoo! Love this Javanese style satay we tried at Sate Jawa Inul Aneka Selera stall in Larkin food centre (on level 3 above the wet market beside the bus terminal).
Sate Jawa Inul Aneka serves only kambing (lamb) and ayam (chicken) satay which are made with fresh meat right here at the stall. Besides satay, the stall also serves soto ayam, bakso, pecel lele and other Indonesian dishes.
The lamb and chicken skewered with skinny bamboo sticks are grilled over red hot charcoal embers. The lady grilling the satay is skilful in managing the charcoal fire and cooking the meat.
The freshly grilled satay are given a splash of black coloured sauce before sending them out to waiting customers. As Sate Jawa Inul Aneka is popular, the wait can be a little long.
The black satay sauce is a blend of sweet savoury and spicy with the taste of crushed peanuts and sesame - like a sort of mildly spicy kicap pedas with bits of peanuts. It's different from the Malaysia/ Singapore style of satay sauce and it is also delicious.
The chicken satay (80 sens each) is grilled till the edges are slightly charred. Inside, the meat is still tender and slightly moist. The subtle natural chicken flavour went very well with the sweet savoury spicy sauce. There was also the slight smokey taste from the charred meat. We like this chicken satay :-D
The moist lamb satay (80 sens each) has a pronounced gamey taste which I like. The grilled lamb also works well with the sate sauce. There are sinewy and rubbery chewy sections in the lamb satay which are a bit hard to swallow.
Many customers eat their sate Jawa with simple boiled white rice. I didn't try it this way but I can imagine that it is a delicious pairing.
Pak Rofi, the brother of Kak Inul Aneka and his niece (Kak Inul's daughter) run the stall together. Kaki Inul founded the stall 25 years ago. Pak Rofi said that this is the Jawa Timur (East Java) style of satay.

was quite disappointed with this satay that we visited today coz the best satay i've eaten in my life was from indonesia... and i kinda expected something similar...
ReplyDeletebut as mentioned on the blog, the mutton is really gamey (more than any i've eaten) and very sinewy (4 of us couldn't chew past it and had to leave 3.5 sticks untouched). the chicken was edible but tough. the good thing is that the satay was as said 80sen/stick (and we weren't over-charged just coz we weren't locals) and ketupat is 1RM/plate.
High Pt: the teh tarik and coffee next to this stall were pretty ok.
Low Pt: was that we found a small c-------- (pest) crawling on the plate.
My Take: there are probably many other satay stalls to try.
