Uniquely Johor Mawar Pisang Goreng Sambal Kicap

This is a common street food in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia but there is something unique about pisang groeng (fried banana fritters) in Johor which you must try :-D

One place many Johoreans go to for their pisang goreng is Pisang Mawar near to Dataran Bandaraya (where the clock tower is) - a stall that has been around at this spot for over 20 years.

Huge bunches of banana and pisang tanduk (plantian) are cut and battered at the stall.

All the pisang goreng is freshly fried here.

Nur and her dad Encik Rashid run the stall with their friendly staff.

Our large plate of freshly fried, piping hot, crispy golden brown fried banana fritters for RM3. I like the crusty batter which is quite hard and shatters audibly between our teeth.

Pisang goreng kicap, the uniquely Johor way of enjoying pisang goreng. The sweetness from the semi melted banana pulp is balanced with savouriness from the watery kicap (soy sauce blend).

It's brilliant and works so well, I wonder why this style of eating pisang goreng isn't as widespread in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia where we eat lots of fried bananas ;-D There is also a version with sambal kicap cili (with chili padi) which has a hot spicy, stinging kick in the sauce. Now, that takes banana fritters to yet another level :-D

Pisang Goreng Mawar also serves lots of traditional Malay snack food like nasi lemak, nasi ambang, mee siam, kuih muih, epok epok, spring rolls etc.

The popular chill out spot in Johor Bahru. There are adequate places to park in front (street side) and behind the stall (open space up the slope).

->> Pisang Mawar is a must try for it's fame, and personally, I like the food here too, especially their pisang goreng kicap :-)

The other famous pisang goreng place in Johor Bahru often mentioned in the same breath with Mawar PG is Pisang Goreng Stulang. If you like goreng goreng, do check this out too. The speciality here for me is their deep fried mushroom ๐Ÿ˜‹ ๐Ÿ‘ˆ click
