KL Pudu Beef King Noodles 牛王牛肉面
Went today to the grimy Pudu area of KL which is one of my favourite food hunting grounds. It's my lucky day today - stumbled upon Beef King 牛王 which is a popular old stall here.
It was near closing time when I got here, so I was one of the last customers of the day. Fortunately, there was still beef and broth available though all the kway teow have been sold out.
RM7 got me this bowl of broth with slices of meat, tripe and beef balls plus a bowl of noodles. I thought this is a reasonable price in this time and age.
The broth has the colour of diluted Chinese black tea. Though light, the broth has a deep savoury flavour with rich beefy taste and a hint of herbal flavour. The broth can be quite addictive if you like robust beefy savouriness.
The pieces of beef was tenderly chewy with a lively spring to the bite (not soft).
The beef balls were firm and dense. Tenderly firm to the the bite and each chew releases nice beefy flavours. One of the best that I have tasted.
I got egg noodles because kway teow (flat rice noodles) was sold out. I like it that the noodles come with toppings of tender minced beef.
The generic egg noodles were well coated with a savoury beefy tossing sauce.
The egg noodles done soft al dente were coated with the slick savoury beefy sauce. It's delicious, reminding me of original flavour 原味 "white wanton mee" - the kind with lard and fried shallot oil blend - with the porcine flavour replaced by bovine taste. Skinny crunchy strips of preserved vegetables in the bowl which were more sweet and tangy than salty added some sourish balance to the savoury beefiness.
So, the switch to egg noodles from kway teow turned out rather well.
Beef King is hard core Pudu, an inconspicuous stall in a maze of shops and stalls in a buzzing hive.
Ah Heng took over the business which his dad started over twenty years ago in Pudu. Ah Heng (and his dad) who hails from Sarawak said that this is the Hakka style of beef noodles. Come to think of it, it really is like Hakka noodles except that it is beef in place of pork.
Pudu and Beef King are just 10 minutes walk from Berjaya Time Square and the KL Monorail Imbi Station.
👍 One of the most popular beef noodle shops among KL folks. I like the egg noodles tossed in beefy sauce. The broth has deep and rich flavours. Good beef, tripe and excellent beef balls.
