Not the Famous Chong Pang Nasi Lemak. Hup Lee Fried Bee Hoon

Blur lor.... for two decades, I have been eating nasi lemak at this coffee shop stall thinking that this is the famous Chong Pang Nasi Lemak. I especially love their chicken wings and sometimes buy dozens for parties.

It is not completely my fault hor.... . This Chinese nasi lemak stall is in Chong Pang Village. It is directly opposite the legendary, extra lucky Chong Pang 7-11 4-D TOTO (betting) shop. Chong Pang Camp is just around the corner, a stone's throw away.

It's only after watching a 30-minute TV show by Singapore Mediacorp featuring the famous Chong Pang Nasi Lemak chain that I realised that it's been a case of mistaken identity all these years πŸ˜›

This is the real famous Chong Pang Nasi Lemak πŸ‘ˆ click

Turns out, I have been eating at Hup Lee Fried Bee Hoon stall εˆεˆ©η‚’η±³η²‰ - not the famous Chong Pang Nasi Lemak 😱 Alamak, Hup Lee isn't even strictly speaking a nasi lemak stall πŸ˜‚ Don't ask me why I never looked at the signboard πŸ˜“

Hup Lee serves fried bee hoon, mee and rice with all the usual stir fried vegetables and deep fried fish cakes, meat rolls, sausages, otak otak, bean curd, fish, eggs etc etc and chicken wings.... oh... the chicken wings.

Everything is freshly cooked right here at the stall at Hup Lee by experienced, long serving staff. Hup Lee has been at Swee Sian Yuen kopitiam for 38 years! It is well loved by Chong Pang folks but somehow remained under the social media radar.

Anyway, this is my usual order at Hup Lee. Fried long beans and chicken wings. They didn't have ikan kuning this morning, so I settled for two chicken wings πŸ˜ƒ

The rice is ok, not great. Some broken grains, parts of it clumped together. But, the grains have the right moistness giving it a nice tender firmness. It also have that old style coconut aroma, flavour and sweetness.

The fresh long beans stir fried with sambal chili have a nice soft juicy crunch and natural sweet flavours with a bit of savoury-spiciness. Nice.

The sambal chili is sweet and mildly spicy with traces of savouriness. I like the taste of onion sweetness here and it is not overly sugary.

These fried chicken wings are the reason why I keep coming back to Hup Lee. Nearly as good as Eng Kee and η„± Fried Chicken Wings, but Hup Lee is very near to where I live so it's more accessible for me. (Friendly auntie will cut the chicken wings up at the joints with scissors before serving.)

The savoury-sweet batter outside is thin and fried till the skin is golden brown, giving it a slight crackly crisp.

The inside is tender, still moist and juicy with a very slight chicken taste.

I always take home a couple of Hup Lee's fried chicken wings πŸ˜‹

πŸ‘‰ Hup Lee is my favourite Chinese style nasi lemak in Chong Pang, mainly because of the fried chicken wings πŸ˜ƒ The other side dishes, the coconut rice and sambal chili are good too. Worth a try, if you are in Yishun.

  4. Guan Sim on Facebook: "This is the curse that all hawkers have to bear ... if U not famous U won't have the sale target ... but once U become famous ... U need the preparations to deal with the massive growth in crowd.

Most of SG hawkers can only deal with increase or decrease in crowd on a gradual basis ...

So when U choose to report it ... aka food blog, food magazine and newspaper etc ... U might need to consider the aftermath of your actions ... some hawkers might not be able to deal with the consequence of fame ... and their ability to handle crowd."

  6. Hup lee have stalls all over singapore.
There's 2 at hougang near my house. One at lorong Ah Soo, the other at Koven wet market.
The one at Kovan has a short queue sometimes. Yes, their chicken wings is good. But not something I'll buy occasionally.
But the food at the lorong Ah Soo stall has gone from bad to worse.
