We were first at Sugar On Top SOT almost exactly one year ago. This was Derek Tan's first cafe - one year on and after a nail biting start, Sugar On Top is an established JB homegrown brand with four outlets and expanding into Penang.
Last year, Derek who is in his early twenties told us that Sugar On Top's food reflects his limited F & B background and willingness to "chiong" ("go for it" mindset). Trusting in his own taste buds and instincts, Derek's F & B "innocence" created a menu that is little SOT SOT (with "crazy" twists).
So, SOT's food got mixed reactions - some hits and some misses. But, they have enough hits - familiar food with quirky twists - that SOT expanded to outlets in Sutera, Mount Austin and Kulai. Outlets in Penang are already in the pipeline.
Here at SOT's original outlet and flagship in Taman Pelangi, it's still the simple, unpretentious cafe, bright and comfortable inside.
We started with SOT's cream of mushroom soup. Nothing fanciful, just the homely creamy soup made with three types of fresh mushrooms. Standard fare but good.

Squid ink pasta done al dente simply tossed in olive oil and served with savoury crispy fried squid rings and salmon roe.
Mentaiko Pasta RM22.90++
Pasta done al dente enveloped in a savoury creamy sauce topped with salty ebiko (shrimp) eggs. Delicious with deep and layered savoury flavours.
Laksa Pesto Pasta RM21.90++
Zesty basil pesto subtly laced with laksa spices. Served with two large fried battered prawns.
Chirpy Bowl 23.90++
Derek's comfort lunch. Simple Japanese boiled rice served with fried chicken chop with teriyaki sauce, egg benny, carrots and crunchy purple cabbage.

👉 Sugar On Top SOT is a comfortable place for a meal in JB. The menu is interesting - the food is familiar like pastas and burgers but with nice unique SOT touches. The serving size is generous and pricing is competitive. The desserts and drinks are pretty delicious and Instagrammable too.
