Coming from JB this morning, we drove straight to the Tim Ho Wan outlet at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur.
The interior is simple, bright and clean. Basic furnishings - small cafeteria type tables, cushioned benches and tiny light stackable stools. The service staff were friendly and efficient.
Here's the dim sum we had.
First to arrive were these Fried Yam Puff RM9.25++
The yam puff was cold. The base of the puff was wet as it was saturated with cold cooking oil. The whole greasy puff crumbled and fell apart like cold wet clay when gently held up by hand or by chopsticks.
The yam paste as well as the char siew fillings were too moist and had little flavour.
Not a good start to our much anticipated meal ๐
Tim Ho Wan's signature Baked Bun with BBQ Pork RM10.85++
Served cold, the baked skin has a slight crisp and a bit of fluffiness. It was not overly sweet. The sparse char siew filling was sweet-savoury and the bits of pork were very soft. The filling was over done till it was like a lumpy sweet jam.
Steamed Spinach Dumplings RM7.83++
We like this dumpling as the skin was thin, tender and clean tasting. The chopped spinach, mushroom and shrimp filling was fresh and had a nice soft crunch. I like the blend of layered natural sweetness balanced with light savoury sauces in this dumpling.

Beef Ball with Bean Curd Skin RM7.83++
I love Hong Kong style beef balls but not this one by Tim Ho Wan. There was no beef flavour at all, none - just a lot of seasoning that tasted like a blend of some unknown chemicals.
These were the worst Cantonese beef balls I ever had at home or in restaurants.
We also like the simple and nice Shrimp Wanton Soup RM11.79++
Just fresh shrimp wrapped in a thin egg & flour dough envelope and served in a savoury sweet soup. Simple and delicious.
Steamed Egg Cake RM7.83++
Bouncy spongy cake with just the right amount of sweetness for me ๐
Tim Ho Wan's signature Tonic Medlar & Osmanthus petal dessert RM6.79++
Served chilled, I like the nice floral aroma with gentle salty-sweet flavours embedded in firm mildly sweet jelly. We enjoyed this pretty and interesting tasting dessert ๐
We had planned to taste a few more dim sum and had skipped breakfast for these, but we had enough after this sampling ๐
๐ More misses than hits - overall, we feel this Tim Ho Wan outlet is not worth the hefty premium we are paying for the generally average to below average dim sum.
Don't take our word for it - please try it for yourself and let us know your experience by leaving a comment. Thank you ๐
