Dropped by Bay Street 66's newly opened outlet at Bandar Sri Alam for lunch today. This is Bay Street 66's third outlet; the other two are in Johor Jaya and Mount Austin.
Bay Street 66 is a modern version of a Malaysian kopitiam. And, as far as "modernised kopitiams" go, Johor Bahru folks are really spoilt for choice. There are many big players in this market segment which caters to families by offering extensive eclectic menus from traditional Malaysian favourites to Western type dishes. They also emphasised dining comfort with well appointed but casual interiors.
Bay Street 66's menu is thick like a coffee table book. True to "modernised kopitiam" form, there are all the usual suspects of Malaysian favourites as well as Western staples like toasts, sandwiches, burgers, tacos, chicken chops, pastas, and even steaks. They got everything covered. To try all the dishes here will take many visits (today, I focus on Western dishes).
I had my usual kopi-C kosong. Nice aromatic, savoury coffee with sweetness and body from evaporated milk.
Soft boiled kampung chicken eggs. They were done a little rarer than my taste but still delicious with eggy aroma and flavour.
Egg mayo toast is a popular dish in JB - every "modernised kopitiam" in JB has it. Bay Street 66's version is the best that I've tasted, so far.
It has a robust eggy and mayo sweet taste with an underlying flavour that resembled lard (but I did not confirm it with the restaurant). It felt smooth, very heavy, rich and creamy but was addictive and hard to resist, if you love egg and mayo ๐
Johor folks love chicken chops, so there are chicken chops with all kinds of sauces from classic mushroom sauce to fancy sauces.
Today, I felt adventurous and so took a little risk to order something new. Chicken chop with mango sauce.
It's a big slab of chicken, quite thick and wrapped in crisp golden batter. The mango sauce is a little too sweet for my taste. The mango slices on the side were so... sweet and fragrant! Next time, I shall go for their other chicken chop flavours.
All my food and drinks today came to RM31.40 (GST included) which I feel is reasonable given the amount and quality of food as well as the cosy ambiance of Bay Street 66.
๐ One more "modernised kopitiam" for JB folks. Food, ambiance and price all right. Check out the new Bay Street 66 when you are in the Masai area. Remember to order their awesome egg mayo toast ๐ I will be back to try their many other dishes like their braised pork trotter (yes, I heard they are famous for this) ๐
