Last night, buddy Phoebe invited me to join her family for dinner at Kim Chi & BBQ Korean restaurant in Taman Pelangi. Unfortunately for me, I was unable to join them due to a prior commitment - my apologies ๐ As I was craving for Korean BBQ, we checked in at Kim Chi & BBQ the very next morning ๐
Spanning two shop lots, Kim Chi & BBQ is one of the larger Korean restaurants that I've seen in Johor Bahru.
Kim Chi & BBQ is among the prettiest Korean restaurants in JB too with Korean decor, furnishings and paraphernalia.
Established in 2008, Kim Chi & BBQ is a well established name in Korean cuisine in Johor Bahru.
We usually go for BBQ sets at Korean restaurants but this time we decided to try out the a la carte dishes.
They started us off with the customary banchan. I like Kim Chi & BBQ's banchan as it has more traditional dishes like various pickles and less of the non Korean stuff. I don't like banchan that has a lot of bulk fillers like commercially processed fish cake, fish ball, fried potato wedges, even oh my gawd.... wieners.
Kim Chi & BBQ's banchan are nice and they are generous with refills.
We were waiting for the staff to fire up our table top oven when he brought us our pork jowl already cooked and cut.
We later found out that unless we specify otherwise, the meat will be grilled and cut in the kitchen. Truth be told, we were a bit disappointed as seeing, smelling and hearing our meat cook and sizzle on our own table top grill is half the fun at Korean BBQ restaurants.
If you are like us, do remember to inform the staff. Normal people don't want smokey grease on their clothes and hair ๐
The pork jowl was slightly browned outside. The fats kept the grilled meat tenderly chewy and juicy. Nicely savoury sweet with a bit of toasty taste (from the browned outside).
We love ssambap - Korean lettuce wrap with grilled meat, raw garlic, raw chili pepper and spicy fermented bean paste.
Never tire of it.
Even crave for it every once in a while.
Our BBQ spicy pork belly from the kitchen.
It turned out that the pork belly was more tender and juicier than the pork jowl. We can taste the natural sweetness of pork underlying the mild savoury spicy marinade. Nice.
Shiok ssambap.
Bean sprout kim chi soup - something crunchy, soupy and tasty to help our meats go down ๐ Nice.
Information for you ๐ Well appointed decor, tasty authentic food, reasonable pricing, Kim Chi & BBQ Korean restaurant is a good choice if you are around Taman Pelangi.
Our receipt. (Oh, that green tea was just tea bag in hot water. I won't order that again.)
We are a little crazy about Korean BBQs. If you are like us, here is our Johor Bahru list. Do share with us your own favourites so that we can add it to the list ๐ ๐ click
