As our car rolled along Bukit Timah Road, buddy Jen asked if anyone wants to stop for his favourite chendol. Of course, all of us want to stop for chendol - there is always time and space for good chendol, any time ๐
Jen brought us to Nyonya Chendol stall at Bukit Timah hawker centre. I know this place well as I come here very often in the 1980s as it had my favourite chai tao kueh (carrot cake) stall at that time. I rarely come here after that stall facing the car park ran by a father and son closed. (Would be grateful if anyone can tell me where the carrot cake stall went to - should be run by the third generation now, if it is still operating.)
We sat near Nyonya Chendol stall #02-147 and noticed that there was a queue the whole time - just longer and not so long.
This outlet in Bukit Timah hawker centre is just one of half a dozen stalls of the expanding Nyonya Chendol chain. Chendol is one of those dishes that work well, made in bulk centrally and assembled at the retail end. The blocks of ice, tubs of coconut milk, palm sugar, boiled red beans and pandan "noodles" are centrally prepared and delivered to the outlets with no loss of flavour or even authenticity.
Every chendol is
One for each one of us (S$2 each). Too good to share ๐
I like the shape (the pointy ice mound looks like the nearby Bukit Timah Hill) and the vibrant natural colours of this chendol.
It tastes good too. The different sweetness from the thick soft pandan "noodles", soft boiled red beans, smooth coconut milk and thick caramelised palm sugar complemented each other, presenting layers of sweetness that made chendol one of the most popular cold desserts throughout Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand all have their versions of it). I like it that Nyonya Chendol's rendition is not overly sweet and the layers complement each other well.
Recommended for you ๐ One of my favourite chendol in Singapore and Malaysia.
