We met for lunch at Restoran Teumsae, a Korean owned family restaurant at Citrine Hub in Sunway Iskandar, Nusajaya Johor. I like the dishes we tried, especially the ginseng chicken soup, deep fried gimbap (rice roll) and jajangmyeon (noodles).
Restoran Teumsae is simple, clean, bright and comfortable inside with furnishings well spaced out.
We had a variety of staple, familiar Korean style rice, noodle and soup dishes. While most Korean themed restaurants in JB are almost inevitably Korean BBQ joints, Restoran Teumsae focus on homely, Korean comfort dishes.
A Korean meal always starts with banchan (small side dishes / appetisers). It's basic banchan fare here at Restoran Teumsae, though quite tasty. I especially enjoyed that fermented black beans which have a firm stiff tender texture and savoury sweet flavour.
I am a fan of Korean style spicy tofu stew (doenjang-jjigae) and would order it whenever it is available (price RM24). Served in a heavy pot that kept the stew warm throughout most of the meal, this was loaded with savoury tangy spicy flavours from the soft tofu, vegetables, mushroom, la la clams and even a flower crab (which I love in soups for the crustacean flavour it adds).
Gamjatang, Korean style bak kut teh of sorts (price RM35). It's meaty pork spine bone, cabbage and potato in a savoury spicy tangy soup. A couple of the dish's key ingredients, perilla seeds and leaves were absent as these are not available in Johor Bahru. Bean sprouts were also missing.
Hot stone bibimbap (price RM24). Korean rice bowl with beef, vegetables and egg.
Cold chewy noodles with vegetables and savoury spicy sauce (price RM25).
The savoury spicy noodles were extra springy to the bite. The vegetables added layers of crunch and flavours to the cold noodle dish.
Jajangmyeon - noodles smothered in a dark almost black gooey sauce (price RM24).
The heavy gauge noodle were slurpy smooth and had a nice interesting tender bouncy spring to the bite. The dark sauce was savoury with a fruity kind of sweetness. The pieces of pork in the bowl also had a gentle spring to the bite and were well infused with the sauce's savoury fruity sweet flavours.
Restoran Teumsae serves a good range of gimbap (rice rolls wrapped with dried seaweed similar to sushi). We picked the one with crispy fried prawns (RM18).
The rice rolls were well made, tightly packed with well balanced flavours in a mix of tender, crisp and crunchy textures. There was just the right amount of clean tasting sweet boiled rice i.e. not too much. It is easy to overindulge in these and blissfully burst our sugar quota. I like to have more of these ๐
I like Restoran Teumsae's rendition of the quintessentially Korean, ginseng chicken soup (samgye-tang). Price RM45.
I like it that at Restoran Teumsae, they use the whole bird, pack glutinous rice in the cavity, and cook it all in soup with ginseng, red dates, etc. The whole bird and the soft rice were well infused with exquisite savoury sweetness with underlying floral kind of ginseng root flavour and aroma.
The ginseng chicken came with a dish of dipping salt but I didn't use it as I like the taste as it is.
Simple, clean, comfortable environment. Good range of Korean dishes. Reasonable prices. I would come back for their ginseng chicken, jajangmyeon, gimbap, tofu stew as well as other dishes which I have not tried yet.
