If you looking for a hearty lunch full of flavours and aromas at an affordable price, go to Pasar Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre for Geylang Hamid's Briyani.
Be prepared to queue during lunch, so I usually avoid the peak hours, if possible.
Hamid is the second generation owner - his father who came from Chennai, south India founded the stall in 1964. It was a push cart stall before settling into its present location after the third move.
Hamid's son, Hannan who has already mastered the trade is slated to take over as the third generation owner.
I had my usual nasi briyani kambing. It's a lot of flavourful rice and mutton for $6. There's also chicken briyani and briyani rice with fried chicken.
The long grain basmati rice were quite wet, a little soft (not fluffy) but rich with cardamon, clove, cinnamon etc mild spice flavours, aromas but no heat.
The ladle full of thick curry sauce added a more robust layer of flavours and some mild spicy heat.
The mutton was a little firm, needed just a bit of tugging with the fork to separate the fibres and just slightly moist inside. There was a bit of infused savoury and spice flavours with subtle underlying lamb gaminess. A bit chewy but I enjoyed it still.
I got this small piece of bone with marrow inside. If you are a marrow lover, I suggest informing Hamid or Hannan that you would like "tulang" - don't leave it to chance ๐
The marrow tasted good! The smooth melt in the mouth oily-jelly was infused with savoury and spice flavours which complemented the marrow's sweetness and certain milky taste.
Information for you ๐ Affordable, flavour packed, hearty nasi briyani.
