Driving into Malacca from Johor Bahru around mid day, the first order of business was to find something nice to eat 😬
It was a blue sky, sunny hot day as we rounded the bend at Jalan Gajah Berang in the direction of our hotel. Passed this busy corner restaurant and so decided to pull over to check it out.
We were not sure what the restaurant was selling but there was a short queue waiting for available tables. Most in the restaurant look local and local tourists from outstation.
While we waited, the lady boss was very friendly and explained to us her dishes.
Hing Loong restaurant basically serves pork chop noodle, spicy beef noodle, pork trotter noodle and minced chicken noodle. There're options for top up of ingredients as side dishes.
Despite the crowd, we didn't wait long before we were seated at a comfortable table.
Vintage mosaic tiles still cover the walls and floors in Malaccan shops giving it a rustic nostalgic charm.
Hing Loong was founded 50 years ago by a Taiwanese, hence Taiwan noodles in the city better known for its Nyonya, Malay, and Portuguese heritage cuisine.
While waiting, I busied myself with taking photos of the frenetic cooking station at the front of the shop.
They were churning out dozen after dozen of sizzling hot thin fried pork chops like they do in Taiwan.
They sent us a freshly fried pork chop slice first 🙏
The tender fried pork chop was nice - it tasted mainly savoury from the marination.
By the time our pork chop noodle and spicy beef noodle came, we already finished the pork chop 🤭
The pork chop noodle is made up of broad flat wheat noodles set in a pool of dark savoury sauce and topped with pieces of thin fried pork chop.
The noodles were done slightly soft but very slurpy smooth. It's a unique likeable texture. It has a subtle sweet taste which was complemented by the savoury sweetish sauce. The tender fried pork chop added tender chewy texture and another layer of savoury flavour to the dish.
It's slightly flat and mild tasting for my Southeast Asian tastebuds but still nice, comfort food kind of nice.
The spicy beef noodle was the same broad flat noodle now in a pool of red brownish watery sauce and topped with stewed beef and a small bunch of salty tangy preserved vegetable.
One bite of the soft tender spongy slightly fatty stewed beef and I was blown away by the its savoury beefy slightly spicy taste.
My kiasu Singaporean instinct kicked in and I immediately ordered a side dish of additional stewed beef 😬🤭
I like the noodles too as its sweetness was overlaid with savoury beefy chili spicy flavours from the soup / sauce.
The portions were not big but just nice for us as we were hopping from makan (eating) spot to makan spot looking for nice places to eat in Malacca.
Give this Taiwan noodles a try next time you are in Malacca. Next time, I want to try pork trotter noodle and pork chop noodle but with spicy soup.
