Buddy Soo Nan jio-ed me for dim sum at Swee Choon at Jalan Besar.
Of course, everyone knows Swee Choon. It is probably the most successful dim sum place in Singapore. It has a sort of cult status, especially among the young.
I've been to Swee Choon a few times. I joked that everytime we stepped in, we instantly raised the average age of people in the whole restaurant ๐คญ๐คฃ
Part of the random picks today for four of us halfway through our session ๐คญ We added more dishes as we went. Eat dim sum is like that. Casual, free and easy, and go with the flow ๐
Anyway, Swee Choon's dim sum is nice - otherwise you cannot explain why people keep coming back for them.
They are not fine, dainty, exquisite edible jewels by artists. But still, Swee Choon's dim sum are handcrafted by artisans and superior to factory made versions you find in many coffeeshops or food kiosks.
I fell back on my old personal favourites like steam pork ribs and they are as good as those anywhere (if you look beyond the well worn tin dish which I actually found charming).
They have fan choy, a childhood favourite. That upturned dimpled tin pot / bowl is iconic / nostalgic to me ๐คญ Swee Choon's fan choy is alright. The flavours are mild and not too greasy.
The dim sum is enough to bring me back to Swee Choon. There's plenty to choose from ๐
While eating dim sum and chatting, we heard sharp slapping, slamming sound from the kitchen. The chef who hailed from Shandong China was kneading and pulling la mian noodles..
La mian noodle master was pulling noodle with gusto whenever there is an order, so they are always fresh.
We were very full, but couldn't resist ordering a bowl with spicy sauce to try.
I don't remember too much of the spicy savoury sauce. But, I love the noodles. It's exactly how I like my noodles.
The strands were of the gauge I like i.e. quite thick. They have a firm tender bite and a light spring, al dente in spaghetti speak. The wantons were also very good - large, meaty, filled with chopped chives and well seasoned. Really enjoyed the noodles and wantons.
Yeah.... I can see why Swee Choon works and keeps growing. The food is nice, prices are within affordable range, convenient location and opening hours. It also has a hip factor thanks to the young crowd.
Personally, I will be here for the la mian and have dim sum at the side, if I am nearby and hungry. No, I will actually come back here just for the la mian even if I am in Tuas ๐

I can't recall exactly, maybe it was around 15 years ago that Swee Choon added lamian items to their menu. I also seem to remember that their first lamian menu items were more than the current six items.
ReplyDeleteAlways loved their noodles, the plain la mian in onion and oil is super appetising, just by itself without anything else, well maybe their double boiled chicken soup too ๐
ReplyDeleteAnd you are also so near to Jalan Berseh, Veerasamy Road, Kitchener Road, etc. Three rounds not enough hor.
ReplyDeleteTheir menu is the ultimate dim sum with the most dishes. Many restaurants oso lose them sia ๐๐คญ
ReplyDeleteYes! So happy you tried and liked it ๐
ReplyDeleteThey started having chefs making their la mian in house quite a while ago when their then A5 menu was expanded to include main dishes. Customers could watch the chef pulling the noodles as you wait for your orders.
This was one of their outstanding items personally. Thank you very much for reminding me about this forgotten item!
Let’s eat! ๐ฝ️
Awesome isn’t it?
ReplyDeleteI first ordered without realising the live station was there. What a literally feast for my sight and gut ๐
Their noodles are quite something. A must order for fans of hand pulled noodles that to me, is a craft and blessing for out tummies ๐
Not sure if your posts are loading in order on my feed.
I saw the one with the photo of your la mian first before this ๐ค
Anyway they have come a long way since 1950s… 4th gen to some of those who are aware ๐
So I head out to try, and indeed good. Onion and oil la mian is also good. Al dente ๐
