Lod chong Singapore is the Thai style of cendol.
Singapore cinema, Yaowarat |
Nobody knows exactly why Thais call cendol, lod chong Singapore. One often cited theory suggests it was popularised in the 1960s by a cendol stall in Singapore coffee shop at Singapore cinema in Yoawarat (Bangkok Chinatown).
The coffee shop known as Singapore Pochana 新加坡茶室 is still in operation in Yaowarat today.
Another theory suggests that it was due to the tapioca flour used in making lod chong which was imported from Singapore. The tapioca flour was known as paeng Singapore or Singapore powder, hence lod chong Singapore.

Been to Yaowarat many times but couldn't understand why I missed out lod chong Singapore at Singapore Pochana all these years. Shall make sure of it on my next trip.
I am so grateful that Khun Pook brought us here to experience a hyperlocal lod chong Singapore in Trang.
The stall was in the narrow gap between two buildings.
The lod chong and fried banana are eaten together.
The green lod chong noodles were thick, silky smooth, soft, and slightly sweet. It came in a bowl of crushed ice and sweetened coconut milk. It is a cold dessert of blended sweetness from tapioca flour, pandan juice, coconut milk and added sugar.
(Unlike cendol of Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, lod chong Singapore usually does not have palm sugar added. At Singapore Pochana, lod chong Singapore has optional chopped jack fruit pieces in jaggery - caramelised sugar syrup.)
The fried banana has a slightly crisp batter coat while inside it was soft tender. Mildly sweet, it complemented the lod chong sweetness well and added textures, layers of flavour and dimensions to the dessert.
Enjoyed lod chong Singapore and fried banana here in this alley stall a lot. The place was cool, clean and comfortable.
It was fun to watch the friendly hawkers preparing food and to chat with them. The food was delicious too. This was one of my beautiful memories of Trang City, a wonderful 5 day trip of south Thailand.
