Ho Huat Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee 和發福建炒蝦麵 | 221B Boon Lay Place, stall #01-135, Singapore 642221 🚅 15 minutes walk from Lakeside station ☏ 6268 1033 ⏰ 9am - 10pm
We decided to explore Singapore's far west and met up at Boon Lay Place Food Village hawker centre.

Boon Lay Place is not much on the social media radar. A bit dated, weathered and far from the city, but it has it own vibes which I like to explore.

The building is unique - large with a spacious centre court. The food stalls, about 50 - 60, ringed around the centre court in two layers.

Circling the rings of stalls a few times, Ho Huat Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee stall caught my eye.


These grabbed my attention.

In a world where more and more fried Hokkien prawn mee stalls are abandoning squid due to erratic supply and cost, it was such a beautiful sight 🦑

I am an old slow-to-change guy, so to me fried Hokkien prawn mee needs to have prawn, pork belly and squid (sotong). Especially sotong as I am a squid lover.


Old busybody (me): Why you arrange until so nice.... ? Later will still just fry into the noodles what.....

There was a long pause.

Oops said wrong thing again 🤭

Lady must have thought - who is this don't-know-who white rabbit 🧑‍🦳 ask such a silly question?

Habit lah.... She finally replied.

I am so impressed. As they say, habits determine character (especially when no one is looking).

So, I made up my mind to order Ho Huat Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee.

Helped yourself to the "self service" lard croutons.

Squid, pork belly, prawns - have all the must-haves according to some old people 🤭

Scallion and pork lard croutons added their textures and flavours.


At first sight, the plate of fried Hokkien mee looked a bit anemic. But, on tasting, it was actually quite delicious.

Egginess was quite dominant followed by garlic taste, then umami savoury sweetness in the prawn-pork stock which was reduced to a slightly gooey sauce. There was very little to no wok hei taste.

The yellow noodles and thick bee hoon were well enveloped by the sauce and its rich flavours. The sotong, prawn and pork belly tastes weren't very pronounced but their mere presence was already reassuring and comforting. Better have, than no more.

The lard croutons though "free flow" were relatively crisp and fresh - not the lao hong (stale 漏风) type. There's also bean sprouts which I like.

The chili was salty spicy. I didn't use it with my noodles (I normally don't as I like to taste the prawn stock / sauce's original flavours).

It's not mind blowing though I think it might, if the noodles were done a little dryer with a subtle toasty cue.

Other than that, the fried Hokkien prawn mee was quite enjoyable. I like their garlicky, umami, savoury, sweet taste. The tender texture and moistness of the noodles were about right for me too.

I recommend this stall because these are traditional independent hawkers. Hawkers that still prepare their own food in the old way, with their own twists and sometimes even creating their own recipes. Independent hawkers are a fast disappearing breed in Singapore. Support them as long as possible.

I am not sure how old is this stall. I hesitate to ask 😬 but buddy said he had been eating Ho Huat Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee occasionally since twenty years ago. He remembers the same ladies at the stall.
