Hup Ho Trading Co Cafe Padungan Kuching Sarawak 合和

Hup Ho Trading Co | #164, Jln Padungan, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia ☎ +6011 1054 1067 ⏰ 9:30am - 8:30pm
Just landed in Kuching, we stepped out to chill a while before going to Siniawan for dinner and the weekend pasar malam.

We went to Hup Ho. It had everything we wanted in a chill out, hangout - charming rustic atmosphere, sturdy comfortable furnishings, no air conditioning but nice and cool inside (with air wells & lots of fans)......,

.... menu with extensive local, Western & fusion options, tea, Nanyang coffee and espresso coffee. Prices within expected range for the experience provided.

The entrance along Jalan Padungan street.

Could easily passed by without noticing when inattentive. The entrance and signboard 合和 were understated and blended in with the other vintage shop units along the old street.

I like the vibes the moment I stepped in.

It felt like an old hardware shop with lots of knick knacks, nice mix of natural and mood lighting. Plenty of photo spots with interesting props, backdrops, and shadow & light conditions. A portrait photographer's dream.

Long and narrow space, it was busy and full of buzz even at 3pm in the afternoon.

We quickly found our seats and put in our orders. They still have old fashioned paper menu, human order takers (not QR code) and servers, like in restaurants.

Our picks came quickly.

Vinegar Stewed Pork with Rice 猪脚酷饭 RM17

Savoury tangy, flavour wise was alright though the pork was firm and chewy including the skin.

Hup Ho Money Chye Fried Bihun 合和 Money 菜炒米粉 RM10

Humble staple of rice vermicelli stir fried with sayur manis, carrot, egg, etc. Savoury sweet with taste of egg and chewy sweet greens. I enjoyed Hup Ho's rendition of this comfort dish which is quite commonly found in Kuching. Do try, if you are a visitor.

Lemongrass Razor Clam 香茅竹蛏 RM18

Thought it would be a perfect complement to the fried bee hoon but the chewy clam didn't have much natural fresh sweet or umami flavour. The savoury salty sauce and chopped lemongrass didn't help much to lift flavours. Inexpensive at RM18.

Grass Jelly Longan Tofu Pudding RM6.

Hup Ho Brown Sugar Tofu Pudding RM5.

Passion Fruit Jelly RM6.

We already had enough coffee and tea for the day, so deferred to Chinese sweet desserts. Turned out that it was a good decision. The desserts were enjoyable. Fresh, not overly sweet, tasty, and inexpensive.

I can just come to Hup Ho and have only desserts like these, and enjoy a great day 😄

I will return here when I am back in Padungan. Lots of photo spots. The food is alright especially the Chinese desserts. I still need to try more dishes and also Hup Ho's coffee (Nanyang & espresso), next time.
