If you love nature, you will enjoy a visit to Tasik Cermin, the Mirror Lake of Ipoh just 20 minutes by car from downtown Ipoh. (Actually, there are two mirror lakes side-by-side together here.)
I've been here twice but never tire of it. Still look forward to more visits in the future.
For me, the highlights are Tasik Cermin 1 (Mirror Lake), Miner's Tunnel, and Tasik Cermin 2 (Hidden World, another mirror lake). All these activities can be completed within one morning.
Come with me and explore. (After this, you can come here on your own with family and friends, including children).
The first thing after getting your tickets is the Miner's Tunnel.
It's a 90 metre limestone passage leading to Mirror Lake 1.
During its heyday about 100 years ago, miners used this tunnel (blasted out of the hill with dynamite) to send iron ore out from the mine.
The end of the tunnel opens up to Tasik Cermin 1 or Mirror Lake 1.
We loaded onto rubber dinghies that took us around the little lake, powered by quiet electric motors.
I appreciate how the park authourities value the lake's serenity because to truly, respectfully immerse in the natural wonders around us, we need to listen to Mother Nature's voice through birds, animals, insects, the movement of leaves in the wind, flow of water in the creeks, etc 🙏
The lake is placid but as they say, silent waters run deep - the lake is at least 30 metres deep.
We skirted and glided around the limestone karst formations that tower at least 100 metres around the lake like a giant deep bowl. The leisurely dinghy ride took about 20 minutes.
Go back out the Miner's Tunnel after the dinghy ride. Don't know who is this person who photo-bombed me, but he did make this picture more interesting 🤭
(This image was taken in 2023 during my first visit here. At that time, there were no benches along the tunnel.)
Next stop is Tasik Cermin 2, the Hidden World.
Suit up with life jacket and helmet, but why need helmet leh?
We loaded up onto dinghies again.
But, this time we have to enter a tunnel which was water filled.
The 130 metre long water tunnel is dark even during the day, and during high tide, the roof of jagged rocks can be very low, passing above our heads by mere inches.
So, helmets are head life savers.
But, the view that greets you when you can raise your head up high again at the end of the tunnel is stunning.
(This image was taken in 2023. At that time, we weren't issued helmets. The height of the water varies and sometimes, the water tunnel may even be impassible.)
Towering limestone karst formations, hardy trees clinging stubbornly onto the sheer, steep limestone cliffs, their green crowning glories hanging over the water like cheerleaders' pom-poms.
The mirror image on the still water surface accentuates the serenity and expands the natural beauty around us. We were here in the morning, the ideal time to view the reflections on the water and enjoy the cool surroundings. Closer to noon, the weather is hot, and the sunlight too bright / harsh making it difficult to see any reflections or take nice photographs.
Have your dim sum, gai si hor fun (chicken rice noodle soup), or nasi lemak early and head over from Ipoh.
Let Mother Nature speak. Communion with Mother in silence 🤫
Tasik Cermin 2 dinghy ride also takes about 20 minutes.
Coming to Ipoh, remember to enjoy also its natural wonders such as Tasik Cermin - it's a fun way to burn off some of the calories from all the good eating in town.
