Shwe Kant Kaw is a very humble hawker stall run by three Myanmese ladies in (Kimly) coffeeshop in block 325, Clementi avenue 5.
Shwe Kant Kaw stall has the longest queue among the food stalls in the coffee shop and they are almost all Myanmese who come from all over our island for their hometown fix.
Shwe Kant Kaw has "economic rice" like Singapore chup cai png (mixed dishes rice ้่้ฃฏ in Mandarin) but with Myanmese side dishes to go with boiled white rice.
We had Lahpet Thoke or fermented tea salad, Mohinga, and Nan Gyi Thoke. All icons of Myanmese cuisine.
I am not going into details about....
Lahpet Thoke...
and Mohinga as I have done so from previous visits to Shwe Kant Kaw (you can read about them here ๐). Suffice to say now that the taste of these two dishes were today, even better than before ๐
In this post, I want to delve a little more into Nan Gyi Thoke (as I have not done so previously).
Wendy tasting it for the first time, said it was like "dry laksa". That's pretty spot on perceptive as Nan Gyi Thoke is made with thick rice noodles (laksa), tossed in a chicken curry sauce, spicy aromatic curry oil and powdered toasted chickpea. It is served with bejo or Burmese fried split chickpea crackers.
The thick rice noodles (laksa) were soft, smooth, spongy which contrasted well with the crispy, crunchy bejo and subtle nuttiness of powdered toasted chickpea. There were a few soft tender slivers of shredded chicken meat.
The rice noodles were thoroughly coated with robust spicy savoury aromatic curry sauce and oil. They were delicious.
If you are Myanmese and need your Nan Gyi Thoke fix, you can get it at Shwe Kant Kaw. If you are Singaporean / Malaysian, and need a dry laksa fix, give Nan Gyi Thoke a try. Not exactly the same thing as the spice blend / flavour profiles are different but Nan Gyi Thoke is really delicious!
Nan Gyi Thoke is customarily served with chicken and vegetable soup. Served in a tiny styrofoam bowl at Shwe Kant Kaw, it looked perfunctory but one mouthful and we were wowed by its peppery spicy taste followed by savoury sweetness of the chicken soup.
I have tried Nan Gyi Thoke at other Myanmese stalls / restaurants in Singapore. My favourite is here at Shwe Kant Kaw. Excellent food at affordable prices.
