This curry mee is a legend for their heap of blood cockles over the noodles.
Girl & Mommy is now a small stall inside a zinc shack coffee shop in the industrial part of Sungai Besi in Kuala Lumpur.
Mommy Yim (Loi Yim Peng) started her curry mee stall over 20 years ago.
Mommy Yim's curry mee stall is the only food stall here at 33 Jalan Emas. There's also a drink stall.
(Girl & Mommy Curry Mee used to be a stall at a food court known as Chan Sow Lin Food Centre but that closed during the Covid-19 lock down. Mommy took a break and reopened here at 33, Jalan Emas.
Between a food court and this quaint space, I like this better π«’ It's actually a lean-to zinc shack covering the gap between two adjacent buildings.)
Mommy's daughter used to help out at the stall, hence the name Girl & Mommy. Ah Girl had since got married and moved to Kuantan. Ah Girl ran a curry mee stall briefly in Kuantan (now closed) while Mommy still runs the KL stall with helpers.
Mommy has various noodles and dishes on her menu but most people are here for the legendary curry mee or η§θ Siham εε±ι’. "Most people" include celebrities and politicians from Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Celebrities (I mean their photos) parade on the wall of fame.
Mommy's signature is her εε±ε·¨ζ ιΈ Big Mac Curry Mee Noodle though she has other noodles and dishes on the menu.
But, I only dare order the basic one without the mountain of cockles. Yet, even for the basic bowl, Mommy gave a lot of cockles. Enough for me.
Actually, I need not be paranoid as the cockles were blanched to well doneness by default. Not outsize big but fresh, clean and crunchy meaty. Nice though the salty blood taste was hardly present.
The curry, soul of this dish, was thick, heavy from fresh coconut milk. Loaded with spice though just mildly spicy hot. Smooth and balanced on the palate, nothing sharp.
There's umami savoury hae bee hiam sambal provided but I didn't feel the need for it as the curry was flavourful enough for me.
Siew yok (roast pork belly). Not bad. Tender, not too salty type. Skin was crisp though dunked in curry.
Soft spongy fried pork skin.
Tau pok or fried tofu puff. Always works well with curry or soup as it sponges up the liquid and its flavours.
Slurpy soft yellow noodles and bee hoon (rice vermicelli) with crunchy bean sprouts.
Satisfying, tasty, hyperlocal foodie experience. If you are a blood cockle maniac lover, yeah... this is the curry mee for you.
