I've eaten frog porridge in Geylang and Johor Bahru before, but couldn't remember which one in Geylang (there are at least four). So, as far as eating frog in Geylang is concerned, I am a frog in the well 🤭
Passing by Eminent Frog Porridge at Lor 19 Geylang today, we decided to give it a try (shall try the remaining 2 or 3 other frog porridge places along Geylang Road next time).
Prices at Eminent Frog were competitive (with plain porridge, service charge, and GST extra). All the frog porridge places along Geylang Road have around the same pricing.
Two of us, we opted for 3 frogs with spring onion (scallion) and a pot of plain porridge.
This is the minimum, buy 2 get 1 free SG$18 order. (All frog porridge places along Geylang Road have the same type of offer.)
The frogs came sizzling and steamy hot in a well weathered claypot.
Three child-fist size frogs were plenty for two of us (who had been on a dawn till night food trail 😄 ).
The frog meat was tender, smooth, slightly chewy to the bite. The natural sweet flavours were very delicate and subtle. These were live frogs, so they were very fresh.
There were generous amounts of spring onion and ginger slices in the thick savoury salty (oyster and soy) sauce blend. Their flavours and savouriness were robust, masking most of the natural flavours of the frog.
I missed the frog's natural sweetness.
I like the texture of the porridge, not watery, thick but not a paste. It had natural rice sweetness with a bit of flavour from scallion and seasoning.
The sweet porridge moderated the savoury salty sauce well and together, make it a good savoury sweet complement for the frog.
