Kaki kaki AW alerted me to Charis Cuisines Hainanese Western Fusion which is one of the social enterprises under The New Charis Mission 🙏
The New Charis Mission's social enterprises create jobs and platforms for ex-drug addicts and ex-offenders to slowly ease them back into society. There are CharisMover, CharisCool, CharisTurf, CharisGift, CharisDurian, CharisFix, CharisPaint, CharisBazaar, CharisStorage and CharisCuisines.
At Charis Cuisines, a Hainanese chef trained and led former addicts and offenders in culinary and restaurant management skills. Hence, the menu at Charis Cuisines focuses on Hainanese and Hainanese Western dishes.
Charis Cuisines is a small, compact space, clean, simply furnished, air conditioned and comfortable.
The service is warm and efficient, the vibes calm, welcoming and relaxing. I like the casual yet peaceful feel here.
Charis Cuisines has a popular daily SGD$10 nett all-you-can-eat buffet (except Sat & Sun) with a different menu everyday.
We didn't have the $10 buffet today. Let Charis Cuisines staff introduce their famous buffet to you.
They also have an a la carte menu
I am here for the oxtail (and vegetable) stew, one of my favourite Hainanese British dishes 😀
There were around three pieces of vertebrae with attached soft tender meat and fat which were well infused with savoury sauce and spice flavours.
The oxtail and generous heap of stewed carrot, celery, etc., were set on a mound of soft creamy mashed potato.
Kaki kaki had fish and chips.
Okay... it was dory (catfish) fillet. It is what it is, nothing to write home about - but still, it was tender, clean tasting, sweet, tasty. It was alright.
But, the crust was admirably done. Just the right thickness, crisp and subtly crackly.
What sets Hainanese style fish and chips apart from the British original is the use of crushed cream crackers instead of traditional dried breadcrumbs. Crushed cream crackers give Hainanese style fish and chips a thiner, lighter, yet crunchier crust.
Eat this with tangy sweet mayonnaise.
I will order this fish and chips again just to enjoy the crust.
For a small top up of $4.50, we had dessert and a drink. Nice pulut hitam (black glutinous rice) with ice cream.
Vietnamese style fried banana with ice cream.
Charis Cuisines now have a buy one main course get one free promotion.
Delicious food, good value, nice environment, friendly service, highly accessible near Eunos MRT station, and supporting a good cause. This could be your favourite group hangout.
Next time, I want to try their famous $10 buffet, house made mushroom soup, green chili chicken, and Hainanese style pork chop. I am also curious about their Hainanese porridge. So many reasons to come back here.

Hey Tony, just in case you’re wondering, Charis simply means “grace” — God’s undeserved kindness and goodness freely given to us.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed Charis, the people and the fellowship there, and experience a little of the grace behind its name too. 😊
Good food with positive vibes
