AFE Yishun Chicken Rice (Yishun Central 925)

After trying the AFE outlet in Woodlands which I thought was quite impressive, I decided to make a pilgrimage to AFE's parent stall at Yishun Central 925.

AFE Yishun Chicken Rice is conveniently located below the block 925 multi-storey car park in Yishun Central, hence it is often referred to as the Yishun 925 chicken rice.

The chicken rice stall is inside Yishun 81 Food Court which is a corner coffee shop. There is plenty of bright, breezy, clean, and spacious seating inside, which adds to the enjoyment of eating here.

AFE Yishun Chicken Rice is the most popular stall in Yishun 81 Food Court.

I indulged in my usual half a bird with bone, skin and fat all on. Half a chicken costs SGD12 and there is an extra 7% GST charge. Eat in kopitiam also must pay GST :-(  So, AFE Yishun 925 is not your regular mom and pop stall.... it's a major chicken rice chain (with outlets at Ang Mo Kio Blk 722, Woodlands Blk 304 and Jurong East Blk 132.)

The chicken was prepared the "poach and dunk in cold water" way. The meaty chicken was cooked through (no visible red blood).

The flesh was tender and juicy but chicken flavour was very weak. There was more chicken flavour in the skin and fat, so I enjoyed the chicken when I eat the meat, skin and fat together in one tender juicy mouthful.

Without the skin and fat, the tender chicken meat was rather bland but it was saved by this dressing sauce. It's a likeable watery blend of savoury sweetness. Probably a blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, chicken stock and perhaps sugar, as it tasted sugary.

I will order chicken feet skin whenever it is available.

Chicken feet skin is pretty flavourless but I enjoy the unique crunch.

The rice was nutty and lightly coated with a gently aromatic layer of oil and chicken broth. I enjoyed this rice.

The chili sauce had a sharp lingering spicy sting which I liked. It also had an assertive sourish tang.

The dark soy sauce had a rather flat saltiness.

There was no ginger sauce.

The soup didn't have chicken flavour and tasted like lukewarm salt water.

AFE Yishun didn't wow me perhaps due to my own heightened expectations after the good experience at their Woodlands outlet. Still, judging by the line at the stall, AFE Yishun has a strong following.

If you are in Singapore's north around Yishun and Woodlands, AFE (Yishun 925) is about the best chicken rice you can get.
