When I took my first bite of this taste bomb, I was stunned by the awesome taste experience. When my teeth cut through the crispy crust, it sunk into the warm top grade D24 durian flesh and released a puff of steam trapped by the crust. This hot steam carried the robust durian aroma making the fried durian taste even better than the natural fruit. I found myself unconsciously taking a deep breath and uttering softly “wow” “oh my god” to myself.

It was not like I was hungry. Indeed, I was feeling rather stuffed after a heavy lunch. I just decided to try out the famous Wah Cai fried durian fritter 華仔三合一招牌炸年糕 since I was in the TUTA area.

Wah Cai did something to the durian that made it taste even better than the natural fruit.

The warm durian flesh shielded from the boiling hot oil by a quite thick layer of batter retained its creamy texture and all its natural flavours plus some more. The hard, crackly crust encased the flavour under pressure like a bottle keeping in the fizz in the champagne. The aroma bursts into your nose and mouth when your teeth breaks open the perfume seal. The taste buds are treated to a warm, creamy, lava like durian that tastes sweet and bitter. (Actually, more sweet than bitter.)

You have to try it and eat it as soon as possible after it leaves the frying wok to know what I am trying to say. (Just be careful that it is tongue scathing hot.)

Each of these taste bombs cost RM2.50 (2012). They costs RM4.50 now (2019).

Wah Cai offers other fried goodies like their signature 3-in-1 fried nian kaw 年糕 with sweet potato and yam. They also have banana puffs or goreng pisang, fried cempedak etc which I cover in other posts.

I am so excited by Wah Cai’s fried durian fritter that I gladly share it with as many people as possible.

Recommended for you 👍 Simply an outstanding street food experience not to be missed. Durian is in season all year round here - a good place to initiate durian novices too 😄😋

    1. Best to drive using the Google map and GPS. Best not to take a taxi to anywhere that you are unfamiliar with. This place is about 20km from KSL.

  4. Don't miss this. Can't find anywhere else in Singapore, Batam or other parts of Malaysia. Only in JB. For all durian lovers, don't die without tasting it! Crispy on the outside and creamy durian on the inside. Wow!

  6. Hi, my partner and I will be visiting in August from Australia and he is a durian lover. Thank you so much for your blog post, he is overly excited. I am a little concerned that you have recommended that we do not take a taxi there. Is it unsafe?

  7. It is generally not unsafe to use a taxi; except they will rip you off as most do not use the meter.
I too would like to try this place as my wife is a lover of durian anything so I suggest we can do a trip together in my car.
Contact me at haroldangus@yahoo.com and let's see how things work out. I live near Taman Daya and suggest we can meet at the Larkin bus terminal(not CIQ) before checking out the durian shop.

  8. simply superb! I'm from K.L and used Google Map to reach the shop and there was a long queue. the uncle and auntie are professional with their work in frying the fritter, allocating them properly so it taste good. One fritter cost RM 2.50 and i bought 20. some customers had a weird look as i'm indian and buying much. they must think i'm crazy.. :)

  12. Went there recently, the durian stall now has one direct competitor just few metres away.... it's Mr Seow's fried durian stall from Tebrau ! Yes, Mr Seow has moved his stall to be beside Wah Cai's fried durian stall.
