Myojo Mee Poh Dry Instant Noodle
The humble mee pok tah 面薄干 is probably the most undisputed and yet unheralded of Singapore comfort foods. This simple dish of flat egg noodles garnished with minced pork and tossed in oil, soy and chili sauce is found in every corner of Singapore.
Outside of Singapore, even just across the Causeway in Johor Bahru, mee pok tah stalls suddenly become scarce. Further away, mee pok tah is virtually impossible to find in restaurant menus in the West, even where there are sizable Asian populations.
So here comes Myojo Mee Poh Dry Instant Noodle from Singapore to the rescue. But, is this really the life saver for the Singaporean craving for a taste of home?
Let's find out.
Tear open the packet and inside are a noodle block, a sachet of seasoning powder and seasoning oil.
The heap of seasoning powder.
The seasoning oil from the sachet. Mainly palm oil and sesame oil with colouring.
The tangled heap of curly mee pok noodles ready to eat within 3 minutes.
Tossing the noodles in the blend of seasoning powder and seasoning oil didn't release much aroma. So, this instant version failed in the aroma department.
The broad noodles had a nice spring. Not the best noodles but close enough to compare well with the average less skillful mee pok tah hawker.
The savoury and slightly spicy blended sauce coated the noodles well. The taste and flavour were likable but quite unlike the sauce at mee pok tah hawkers.
Myojo Mee Poh Dry Instant Noodle isn't comparable to the noodles from good mee pok tah hawkers but the noodles from the average mee pok tah seller isn't ahead by a very big margin.
If I am far away from Singapore or Malaysia and need the taste of home, Myojo Mee Poh Dry Instant Noodle is a reasonable stand in.
Myojo Mee Poh Dry Instant Noodle is certified Halal.
Rating: 5.5/10 based on Johor Kaki standardised instant noodle rating system.
