Maggi Laksa Instant Noodles 叻沙

Maggi recently launched their version of Laksa 叻沙 instant noodles with much fanfare. 

Maggi Sense Laksa 叻沙 instant noodles are made in Malaysia by Nestlé.



At SGD7.95 (RM20.30) for a pack of 4 packets, I felt this was rather pricey for quite basic instant noodles. I had to dig quite deep, risking making a hole in my shallow pocket for the sake of blogging this :(

For comparison, MyKuali Penang White Curry Laksa retails at just RM6.90 for a pack of 4.



Inside the packet, the noodle block and two sachets, one containing coconut powder and the other laksa paste.



The noodles were the conventional steamed then oil fried type, so there was a slight greasy feel to the brittle noodles.



The coconut powder had milk protein added.



The laksa paste released a nice fragrance when I cut open the sachet. The laksa paste is made with a blend of natural ingredients like chili, ginger and shallot as well as synthetic chemicals held together with palm oil. (The packet stated that there is "No Added MSG".)



This bowl of laksa was made by following the instructions on the packet to the letter.

It was ready to eat within 5 minutes.



There was a nice aroma of spices rising from the pot as I was cooking the noodles.



The wheat noodles were relatively thick, and not coiled around like average instant noodles. The noodles were soft yet slightly al dente. I am glad that Maggi Laksa's instant noodles didn't have the sponginess of average instant noodles.

The noodles were clean tasting and had a slight generic wheat flavour.



The broth had a good round body from the coconut and milk. There was a nice spicy zing that lingered a while in the mouth, and then it was gone. I could also taste the ginger, and I enjoyed the bits of real chili floating in the laksa broth.

The spiciness was nicely balanced by sweetness from the coconut, milk and sugar.



And, now for the signature Johor Kaki dip stick test.



Maggi's Senses Laksa did really well in the dip stick test. There was relatively little oil stuck to the dip stick - much less than the other laksa/ curry instant noodles that I have tested so far.

The laksa broth tasted good enough for me to drink it to the last drop - something I rarely do for instant noodle tastings.

I also did not feel MSG thirst after drinking the whole bowl of laksa - not bad!

Maggi Laksa Instant Noodles is certified Halal.

Rating: 6.5/10 based on Johor Kaki standardised instant noodle rating system. (Maggi Sense Laksa would have rated higher, if it was priced a little lower.)
